Road Test: Clarisonic Mia Arcona Set
We road test the high-tech beauty device.

Here’s the deal with my skin: with a little bit of luck, good genes and dedication to a strict skin regime, I’ve managed to keep my face pale and (mostly) clear for a long time. But, like most of us, I had my beef. My skin hasn’t always felt as soft as I’d like, and my pores are practically the size of craters.
Enter the Clarisonic Mia, a facial cleansing brush that looks like a giant electric toothbrush (with good reason – it’s made by the makers of the Sonicare toothbrush!). The device comes with a brush head for sensitive skin, though Normal and Delicate brush heads are also available for purchase, depending upon your needs. The Mia also comes with a trial-size tube of Clarisonic’s creamy Gentle Hydro Cleanser, and when you buy it from Beauty.com you can also get it with Arcona’s Magic White Ice Gel and Booster Defense Serum, all for $149.
I used the Clarisonic Mia with Arcona’s system twice daily for two weeks. After the first use of the Clarisonic Mia, my skin felt softer and smoother. I followed up with the Arcona Booster Defense Serum and Magic White Ice in the morning, but skipped the serum at night. The next morning, my skin was soft, smooth and noticeably firmer. I even saw my pores start to shrink after just one day!
Conditions improved for one week, but then, as is common with my skin, I broke out. I don’t know about you, but every time I switch up my skin routine, my skin flips. I had hoped I was out of the woods after one week of improvements, but no such luck. Thankfully, the four zits that popped up on my chin and cheeks were easy to cover, and they disappeared within three days. I didn’t switch up my routine; I stuck with the Clarisonic/Arcona system. After two weeks, my skin is practically flawless.
Likes: After just one day, my skin felt smoother, softer and tighter. I could see my pores shrinking over the course of a week, and my skin has continued to look better and better. My pores haven’t disappeared (and they probably never will), but they are absolutely smaller than they were. The Mia hasn’t totally erased the redness that shows up on my nose and cheeks, but that’s been there for as long as I can remember – I doubt it will ever leave! My skin looks great without makeup, but when I add foundation, blush – the works, it looks like I stepped out of an airbrushed ad. Not bad, eh?
Dislikes: Within the first week, I did notice that when I looked at the pores on my nose closely (because who doesn’t?) there was some gunk pushing its way out. My skin looked good from a distance, but up close I could tell that the Mia was shaking things up. This did work itself out after about a week and a half – you just have to grin and bear it, I suppose. Same with the breakouts. I’ve found that it’s not unusual for your skin to react to a new product, but it all happened at once for me, and waking up with four pimples after a week of clear, soft skin is not a pleasant experience.
After four more days, the pimples were all but gone, and I was back to clear, beautiful, tight skin with minimized pores. You may have to be patient, but the Clarisonic Mia is absolutely worth the investment.
