SHED your Stuff
4 things to toss out of your life
-Mary Beth Sammons
Looking to make some mega changes in your life? It’s time to just SHED it.
What Is SHED?
It’s a four-step life cleanup process for letting go of things that represent the past so you can unbarnacle yourself from attachments, obsolete items and time-wasting habits that drag you down and keep you from leading a more abundant life. And, we’re not talking put all this junk in little organizational piles that you’ll never get to later, according to the new book When Organizing Isn’t Enough: SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life, by Julie Morgenstern (Fireside, $24).
If you can use for a little clutter-free bliss, here’s how to SHED your belongings (i.e., try these four steps to toss junk out of your life):
1. Separate the Treasures: Figure out which habits clutter your life and get rid of them (watching too much TV, OCD’ing on e-mail, working too much), and keep only those habits that help you.
2. Heave the Trash: Getting rid of the defunct, extraneous and burdensome objects and obligations that are weighing you down creates space for you to discover what’s next and to find the energy and courage to move forward.
3. Embrace Your Identity: Create a life theme or a vision for moving ahead, one that matches who you are. For example: “creativity, adventurous, filled with wisdom.”
4. Drive Yourself Forward: The ultimate payoff? Clarity, lightness of being, authenticity and living as your most genuine, fully engaged self.
