BC: How did your song, “Rules”, end up on the Hunger Games soundtrack?
JD: T. Bone Burnett, the producer of the album, sent over the song “Rules” and asked what I thought about it. I instantly fell in love with it, and tracked and recorded it a week later! It all happened so fast, and I really wasn’t expecting it all.
BC: What do you believe this song was inspired by?
JD: Although I didn’t write the song, I think I have some insight on where the writer was coming from because I read all the books and am a total fan-girl. To me, the song’s about Peeta realizing that Katniss doesn’t really love him. It’s such a hard thing when love is a one-way street.
BC: If you were a character in The Hunger Games, which District would you call “home”?
JD: It would be super cool to be a career from District 2 or something, but I would want to be friends with Katniss, so I’d probably pick District 12.
BC: Burning question: Team Peeta or Team Gale?
JD: This is a super difficult question because Peeta is so sweet, but Gale is way more of a hunk. I think I’m going to have to go with Team Peeta.
BC: How did you feel when the Hunger Games soundtrack hit number one on iTunes?
JD: Oh gosh, since everything happened so fast, I was just beside myself! It was a very exciting feeling.
BC: You seem to have such an amazing, supportive fan base. What do you hope to accomplish this year?
JD: I love my fans! They are the most awesome fans I could have ever asked for. I hope to have a single out this summer, and for an album to follow a few months later. A North American tour would be nice, too! I just hope it all pays off and my fans like what I’ve been working so hard on, because honestly, my music means nothing if nobody listens to it.
BC: How has your life changed now that your work is featured on one of the top albums in the entire country?
JD: Every few days someone recognizes me in public and congratulates me on the success, and it’s so nice of them but weird too! I’m still getting used to it. But for the most part, I’m just in the studio recording and making music, and hanging out with my family and friends. None of that has changed.
