Suzanne Somers’ Secrets: Daily Sex, Favorite People and Surviving Tragedy
“I am proud of being a survivor.”
-April Daniels Hussar
To me she’ll always be “Chrissy Snow” from that show I loved but wasn’t really supposed to watch (oh how times have changed … Three’s Company used to be risqué?!) – but Suzanne Somers is, of course, SO much more than that. She’s not only an actress, but a singer, author, and businesswoman. Suzanne’s latest venture is her book and now website Sexy Forever (www.SexyForever.com), which outlines a “revolutionary” weight-loss plan she says will help women stay fabulous at every age. Personally, I always love hearing from a woman Suzanne’s age who proves that age really is just a number—Helen Mirren, Susan Sarandon, Demi Moore, Madonna (God love Madonna!), Betsey Johnson, Suzanne Somers—these are just some of the ladies today that make me look forward to getting older instead of dreading it!
We got caught up with the “Sexy Forever” dynamo who – judging by her amazing looks and vibrant outlook on life at age 64 – knows what she’s talking about! Seriously — wait until you hear about her sex life…
If you could go back in time and give your 20-something self one piece of advice, what would it be?
I would have told me, “Stop eating all the food in bags and boxes with chemicals, stop taking over-the-counter drugs and birth control pills, sleep more, and stop worrying.”
What about staying fit and sexy is so important to you –why have you decided to spread this message?
Like it or not we are all going to live to be 90 or 100 years old thanks to advancements in technology. This is great, except very little thought has been given to the quality of that life (here’s where I come in). I want to enjoy these extra years as a fully functioning person, not foggy brained, wheelchair bound or god forbid, spend my final years warehoused in a nursing home… The sexy part is good health. When you have great health you feel alive and sexy.
You’ve been through some major tough times in your life (breast cancer, the Malibu fire) … what inspires you to keep your incredible outlook on life?
Breast cancer forced me to take a good look at what I had been doing relative to diet and lifestyle habits that may have played host to this terrible disease. … Breast cancer caused a bell to go off in my head. I decided to eat better because my life does depend on it. As for my house burning down, I learned two things: gratitude for our lives being spared and letting go of attachment — love in your life is all that matters and things can be replaced. Gratefully, I have that — my devoted husband, my children and grandchildren, good friends. That is the “stuff” of life.
Is there anything in your life you wish you could “re-do”?
I would have nursed my baby. I was a teenager at the time. After delivery, when I asked if I was nursing, I looked at the attending nurse who said, “Mother’s milk has germs, formula is much better for the baby.” I nodded and she gave me the dry up shot … My son was plagued with allergies and upper respiratory infections throughout his life. Even today in his forties, if he gets a cold, infection or flu, I get a pang of guilt which he laughs off. If I could redo that decision I would, but I also believe we do the best we can do with the information we have at the time.
What are you most proud of?
I am proud of being a survivor. Like a schmoo, every time I’ve gotten knocked down I have popped back up again and tried to learn from the experience. I have found forgiveness for those in my life who hurt me and I truly believe that forgiveness is a gift you give yourself.
Who, in your opinion, are some of the sexiest celebs today and why?
I dig Sharon Stone … Great taste, great style, confidence, sexy, talented, smart. Can I put Tom Ford in this category? Sexy sexy sexy, creative, from fashion to architecture, to interior design to filmmaking. … Loves to laugh. The real “it” guy. One of my favorites is Barry Manilow, my longtime dearest friend, who writes the songs the whole world sings that make you want to dance barefoot in your living room with your honey drinking a Patrón Silver on the rocks with the lights real low. Barry is a funny guy and that’s sexy to me. People who are real good at what they do and the confidence that that exudes are the sexiest people to me.
What are some ways that anyone can feel sexier?…
