The 10 Most Memorable Celebrity Memes of 2011
From Feminist Ryan Gosling to Steve Buscemeyes, we’ve got all of the most memorable celebrity memes of 2011 right here. Happy New Year!
You guys! 2011 is almost over! That’s kind of crazy. So let’s celebrate the good times, the not-so-good times, and the really weird times with the help of some of our favorite celebrities. In fact, let’s take a look at some of our favorite celebrity MEMES. What’s a meme? If you need to ask that, you’ve probably been living in a cave far, far away from the rest of the world for the last ten or twenty years, but I’ll humor you: At base, a meme is an idea. It’s an idea that goes viral, spreading from person to person. Kind of like a parasite. But when the Internet gets involved, memes take on a whole new life: They meet Photoshop, they get inserted into wacky pictures, and they spread fast and furiously. Naturally, celebrities are magnets for memes, especially when they do weird or otherwise notable things. So from Ryan Gosling to Obama’s Situation Room, let’s take a look at some of the most memorably memes of 2011!
Note: The fact that these are the most memorable memes doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re good. Some of them are; but some of them really, really, aren’t. You’ll see what I mean when you get to them. And off we go!
1. Feminist Ryan Gosling
Obviously this one was going to be at the top of our list; we did do an entire feature solely focusing on Ryan Gosling memes, after all. A variation on the popular F*ck Yeah Ryan Gosling “Hey, Girl” meme, Feminist Ryan Gosling debuted on October 8, 2011. It’s also one of our favorite things ever. We salute you, Feminist Ryan Gosling!
2. Celebrities Without Eyebrows
Okay, so admittedly, this one has actually been around for a few years, but it didn’t really take off until this year, so we’re including it in our roundup. What is it? Exactly what it sounds like: Images of celebrities with their eyebrows removed via Photoshop. According to the experts at Know Your Meme, the first major spike for Celebrities Without Eyebrows happened in March of this year when BuzzFeed posted a batch of related images; then in September, the meme saw its biggest spike to date after the creation of the Celebs With No Eyebrows Tumblr. Personally, we think ‘shopping someone’s eyebrows off makes them look like an alien, like Anna Paquin here.
3. Rebecca Black
I told you they weren’t all good. Rebecca Black is arguably the worst thing to happen to music in its entire history, and during her brief reign of 2011, she managed to infiltrate herself everywhere (I will never forget the time I was woken up in the wee hours of the morning to some girl drunkenly singing “Friday” outside my window. Except that it was Sunday. Not cool). Rebecca even got sucked into the “Hipster” meme (remember Hipster Ariel?), which is why that is the picture we have included of her in this list. Because Hipster Rebecca Black is way cooler than regular Rebecca Black. Can someone please go shut the Ark Music Factory down? Please? Pleeeeeease?
4. Swaggering Alice
Tina Fey is awesome. This we know. What we didn’t know was how awesome Tina Fey’s daughter Alice is—until April of this year. That was when a hilarious picture of little Alice swaggering along like nobody’s business first appeared on Reddit. Not unlike notable 2010 meme Strutting Leo, Swaggering Alice then got Photoshopped into every possible situation imaginable—like this still from Reservoir Dogs. I’m not sure how appropriate it is to put a six-year-old into a Quentin Tarantino film, but appropriate or not, it’s HILARIOUS. Swagger away, Alice. Swagger away.
5. Princess Beatrice’s Hat
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Royal Wedding provided some terrific meme fodder. My personal favorite involves Princess Beatrice’s… shall we say, unique fascinator. It got turned into everything from the Eye of Sauron to the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and each new interpretation of it was more creative than the last. How’s this for a literal cat in the hat?
More celeb memes, including Steve Buscemeyes and Paula Deen Riding Things, up next!
