4) The Hunger Games Teaser Trailer Debut

One of the most hotly-anticipated moments of the VMAs was the screening of the world’s very first look at footage from the upcoming movie The Hunger Games. Though many were somewhat disappointed by what was shown—no glimpses of Gale (Liam Hemsworth) or Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), alas!—we did get a good look at Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, as well as a peek at one of the traps she’ll face in the Games’ arena. Hopefully there will be more to come!

5) Britney Spears and the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award

Where to start with this one? Well, there’s Britney, of course, who is looking healthier than she has in a good long while. Then there’s the tribute dancers, who work their energetic way through the highlights of Britney’s career. But surely the best part is Lady Gaga’s Jo Calderone’s attempt to win a kiss from Britney: Britney pulls back saying, “I’ve done that already!” And boy, has she ever.

6) The Amy Winehouse Tribute

And last but not least comes the most moving moment of the night: The music world’s tribute to Amy Winehouse. With a lovely introduction by Russell Brand and great performances from Bruno Mars and Tony Bennett, Amy shone, even though she wasn’t there. Here’s Bruno Mars’ performance of “Valerie.”
