The Betty Interview: Sherri Shepherd
Comedian-talk show host Sherri Shepherd dishes with Betty Confidential about bathing suits, breasts and the perfect man
Sherri Shepherd is on an all-time high. The outspoken 42-year-old not only gets to spend every weekday on the Emmy-nominated show The View alongside her inspirations Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg, but the successful comedian also has a new sitcom of her own, Sherri, debuting on Lifetime on October 5. Plus, she’s the proud mom of an adorable 4-year-old, Jeffrey, and she just slimmed down to be in the best shape of her life. It doesn’t get much better than that!
When I meet up with Sherri in the dressing room of her new NYC-shot sitcom, she’s dressed down in black cargo pants and an MVP T-shirt (the WWE wrestler who recently escorted her to her Chicago high school’s prom since she didn’t get to go as a teenager). Her hair is back in a ponytail (no wig!) and she’s sans makeup. She’s clutching a Malcolm-Jamal Warner T-shirt and CD as she lets out a school-girl squeal. “Can you believe I get to call him my husband?” she asks. “He’s one fine man.”
Malcolm, who will forever be known as Theo from The Cosby Show, plays her cheating ex, based after her relationship with her real-life former hubby, who knocked up a Subway sandwich maker while he was still married to Sherri. “I could have completely broken down when I found out he cheated on me-and sometimes I did-but I incorporated the stories into my standup, and now my TV show, to help me get through those painful experiences. Laughing at the situation seemed better than crying,” says Sherri, who’s now raising her son as a single mom.
During the custody battle, Sherri was able to lean on her BFF from The View, Elisabeth Hasselbeck. “I didn’t have my son for a whole year while my husband and I were fighting for custody,” reveals Sherri. “It was the hardest time of my life. I’d be in tears during commercial breaks of the show and Elisabeth would be the one to hold me and pray with me. Then she’d call me and text me to ask me over to her house for dinner.”
