The Terrifying Trend of Technicolor Hair
From Lady GaGa to Katy Perry, day-glo hair is par for the course with today’s pop-tarts.
The CFDA Fashion Awards were last week and Lady Gaga, naturally, upstaged all of the attendees with her sassy attire. This time it was a black bustier and see-through bodysuit. There were pasties involved.
After soaking in the entirety of Gaga’s wild look, we finally noticed her bright turquoise bob. A wig, to be sure – and this is not the first time (or even the tenth) that Gaga has been spotted donning a cartoon-colored mop. She consistently opts for wild hair hues, most recently gracing the cover of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar with bubblegum pink styles. While Gaga insists on breaking rules and pushing boundaries, her technicolor hair habit actually appears to be par for the course in the pop star world these days.
Much to the chagrin of the Lock & Mane blogging team, hip hop darling Rihanna has been rocking the same fire-engine red hair for over a year now. RiRi’s hairstyle seems to change every time we blink, from a crazy curly lion’s mane to a chic bob at the Billboard Music Awards earlier this month, but the hair color remains: bright red. And while you may think the singer’s fiery hue is merely a blip on the hair trend radar, it actually has staying power– we’ve spotted everyday folks with Rihanna-esque red locks. Scary stuff.
Katy Perry’s electric blue Teenage Dreams wig has become her signature look– so much so that it’s almost strange to see her raven locks.
And then there’s Nicki Minaj, who is giving Gaga a run for her money in the crazy hair department. Nicki has donned every color under the sun, from hot pink to bright yellow, culminating in our all time favorite: rainbow. It’s fierce. It’s daring. It’s terrifying. There are no words to describe Nicki’s hair chutzpah.
While we initially theorized that this was the Hunger Games plot come to life (brightly colored upper class locks may signal end of days?), we’ve come to understand that this is just pop stars being pop stars. And with the whole pop world going technicolor, it may be more shocking if these ladies stuck with a good old fashioned mousy brown.
We are women of a certain age (what exactly that is we won’t tell you) which means we have lived through years where Manic Panic was available in the Hot Topic at the mall and everyone did some hair-experimenting before a Phish or a Flaming Lips concert.
We never thought the trend would circle back so soon. What do you guys think? Is technicolor hair here to stay? Will you be dabbling in day-glo?
