What do women typically want to go with our popcorn and Junior Mints? Romantic films with Hollywood endings – true. But that doesn’t stop us from enjoying a raucous, knock-down, drag-out, fairy tales gone wild extravaganza, featuring a gutsy heroine or villainess we can really sink our teeth into!

Right now there’s major Oscar buzz about two female movie mavericks — Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), the 14-year-old farm girl who sets out to find her father’s murderer in the Oscar-nominated drama True Grit and of course, Natalie Portman’s psycho ballerina in Black Swan. In the spirit of crazy, bad-ass chick flicks, we present … the top 10 maverick chick flicks of all time!

10. The Long Kiss Goodnight, 1996

The Long Kiss Goodnight

Get ready for an incredible ride in this action-packed thriller that you will want to watch again as soon as it’s over! Samantha Caine (Geena Davis) is the quintessential PTA mom until her amnesia wears off and her past comes back with a vengeance. Don’t you hate it when that happens?

9. Silkwood, 1983

Seems things haven’t changed much in corporate thinking (remember the BP Oil Spill last summer?) since the making of this true story over 25 years ago. Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep) battles for the rights of fellow factory workers as her boss cuts safety corners in the making of plutonium fuel rods for nuclear reactors.

  1. What a fun list! Who doesn’t love to debate top 10 lists so I have to throw my two cents in and make my case for the original chick flick, THE WOMEN, (1939) + Pam Grier in FOXY BROWN (an honorary Betty if there ever was one) + LA FEMME NIKITA which paved the way for Uma to Kill Bill and Angelina to be amazing if underrated in Salt. Oh, I could go on for days…
