Bill Clinton and North Korean President Kim Jong Il Following his arrival in N. Korea this morning, former President Bill Clinton secured the pardon and release of imprisoned American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee, the Huffington Post has reported. That Mr. Clinton is one fast mover (as Monica Lewinsky could no doubt attest).

The journalists, who worked for former Vice President Al Gore‘s Current TV and were arrested in March for reporting from the border between China and North Korea, were sentenced to 12 years of hard labor for entering the country illegally and engaging in “hostile acts.”

Earlier today the families of the journalists posted the following statement on the Web site lauraandeuna.com:

“The families of Laura Ling and Euna Lee are overjoyed by the news of their pardon. We are so grateful to our government: President Obama, Secretary Clinton and the U.S. State Department for their dedication to and hard work on behalf of American citizens. We especially want to thank President Bill Clinton for taking on such an arduous mission and Vice President Al Gore for his tireless efforts to bring Laura and Euna home.” (CNN.com)
