BC: Who’s your skincare role model? Living, dead, famous not—anything goes!
DOD: My friend Tina K, founder of Belle Visage in Studio City, CA. Tina co-owns the spa with Inez Dunst, Kirsten Dunst’s mother. During my time in LA, I was a client there and learned so much from Tina about caring for the skin. She earned her esthetician’s license at the ripe old age of 15, and has an incredible wealth of skin health knowledge. She’s also a total perfectionist and cares so much about her work—it really inspires me. Anyone who has been in her spa knows she truly has a passion for the skin. She’s absolutely one of the best in her field.
BC: What was the first thing you ever made?
DOD: I think the first thing would have been a facial clay mask—I used to make them by mixing French green clay with floral water. In fact, I still make it from time to time.
BC: Do you have a favorite Moana Beauty product? What is it and why?
DOD: Well, naturally, the Monoi Oil itself, since that’s what inspired me to create the line. Aside from that, I’d have to say Beach Body Polish. Like many women out there, I’m a scrub junkie and the Beach Body Polish is the perfect scrub in my opinion—absolute heaven. Three different types of grains (Bora Bora Sand, Tahitian Coconut Shell Powder and Raw Turbinado Sugar), a little Monoi Oil with sea algae extract, a thick cleanser base, and it fresh, beachy smell: What more could you want?
BC: Have you ever had any disasters happen while working on a new product? Have you ever created something and ended up not liking it?
DOD: Definitely. I’ve misread my own handwriting, grabbed the wrong bottle of something, heated something for too long… You learn VERY quickly to double check everything while you work and to take your time. I have made something and ended up not liking it, but it wasn’t an initial dislike. I used it for months and then ultimately decided, no. That’s what the creative process is all about. You try it out and work from there until it’s perfect.
BC: What about happy accidents? Have you ever had something go horribly wrong, only to have it turn out to lead to something amazing?
DOD: I did have that happen with a fragrance once. I was blending a fragrance and grabbed the wrong bottle (see above!) and it ended up smelling better than I had originally planned, so I stuck with it.
BC: Time for a few favorites: What’s your favorite color? Scent? Season of the year?
DOD: Color: Robin’s Egg Blue. Scent: It depends on the time of day. In the morning, I prefer florals or citrusy scents; in the evening, I like beach and musks. Season: Summer—which is a good thing, since I live in Southwest Florida!
