Kelly Clarkson

I may not be a huge American Idol fan, but I’ve had a growing amount of respect for Kelly Clarkson over the years. In the almost-decade since she became the very first Idol winner, she’s fought to regain creative control over her music instead of turning into a cookie cutter pop star, AND she’s been a terrific role model for positive body image to boot. Right now, she’s in the middle of her Stronger tour, and at Sunday night’s concert at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ, she broke out a fun feature she calls “Fan Request.”

Here’s how it works: Before every show, she lets somebody who’s going to be in the audience that night pick a song for her to sing, and then she and the band learn it in time for the show that night. On Sunday, that song happened to be “Shake It Out” by Florence + The Machine. You all know how we love Florence + The Machine here at BettyConfidential, so let’s take a listen, shall we? Here it is—Kelly starts to sing at the 2:34 mark, though the pre-performance banter is pretty funny (Note to self: Never bring a vuvuzela to a Kelly Clarkson concert, or she will kick your arse):

How do you think Kelly matches up to our girl Florence Welch? For comparison purposes, here’s the original:

Not bad, right? I think she does admirably with it. Both Kelly and Florence have extremely powerful sets of pipes, so this cover is right up Kelly’s alley. I also kind of love that this tune is apparently her favorite workout song. Good on you, Kelly!

Tell us: What song would you want to hear Kelly cover?
