Video: Kristen Wiig Bids a Tearful Farewell to ‘SNL’ With a Song and a Dance
Kristen Wiig bid farewell to Saturday Night Live this weekend with a bittersweet song and dance. Awwww.
Well, it finally happened: Kristen Wiig, longtime cast member of Saturday Night Live, taped her last show on Saturday night. And what a show it was! Hosted by the one and only Mick Jagger, the episode featured musical guests Jeff Beck, the Foo Fighters, and the Arcade Fire—as well as an emotional sendoff for Kristen.
Since it’s graduation season for students everywhere, it’s only fitting that the sketch began in the guise of a high school grad ceremony presented by Sir Mick. It quickly gave way to a sweetly melancholy song and dance as Kristen, serenaded by the Arcade Fire, took a turn on the floor one by one with each of the current SNL cast members and creator Lorne Michaels. A number of former cast members also showed up to bid Kristen farewell, including Amy Poehler, Chris Kattan, Chris Parnell, Will Forte, and Rachel Dratch—and surprise! Jon Hamm, Bridesmaids’ resident jerk (but a sweetheart in real life!) even put in appearance.
Though no official announcement had been made prior to the airing of this episode, Kristen’s departure came as no surprise. When Bridesmaids became the explosive hit that it did, Kristen’s career started blowing up in a big way—and deservedly so. Sadly, though, this meant that it was time for her to move on to new, uncharted territory. From Penelope to Kat and from the Target Lady to Aunt Linda, we’ll miss the countless zany and spectacular characters she’s created on the show over the past seven years; we do, however, know that she’s got so many more terrific things to do, and we can’t wait to see what they are.
Just in case you feel like making yourself cry this morning (it is Monday, after all), here’s the video of Kirsten’s farewell. It’s definitely bittersweet—you can simultaneously see how difficult it is for Kristen as well as how grateful she is about it. It’s somewhere around the 2:50 mark—when the tune changes to the Rolling Stones hit “Ruby Tuesday”—that you can see the tears glistening on her cheeks:
We’ll miss you, Kristen—but we wish you the best of luck in what’s sure to be your bright and shining future!
