Why Women Play Games: World, Meet Betty Games!
Games aren’t just for guys– and we’ve got our own Betty Games right here at BettyConfidential!
From the BettyConfidential Collegiate Dictionary, 9th ed:
The Holy Dude Trinity (n.): Those three sacred things of which every dude must partake in order to consider himself a member of Dudedom: The Mancave, Football… and Gaming. Generally, Football and Gaming occur within the Mancave, sometimes in quick succession. Through them, the Dudes of the World unite within the Church of Dude.
But guess what, ladies? Video games aren’t just for guys. Even though gaming has long been considered a largely dude-oriented activity, women and girls actually make up 40 percent of the gaming population—which means that said gaming population is split almost right down the middle between women and men. For reals!
I don’t know about you all, but I actually grew up in a house where video games were a family activity. My dad introduced my brother and me to the world of gaming at an early age, starting with the old Infocom text games (Zork? Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? Classic!), hitting the LucasArts point-and-click adventure games along the way, and finally winding up at Myst. The games that we played were mostly puzzle-solving games, rather than shoot-em-ups—which taught us something else about games: You don’t need to be a hardcore gamer to enjoy them.
And that, my friends, is where Betty Games comes in. You may have noticed that there’s been a button hanging out at the top of BettyConfidential’s main page next to the BettyTV button. It’s a little teal button of a gaming die. Click it, and it will take you somewhere magical.
Betty Games is a new feature we’re rolling out here at BettyConfidential, and it’s full of—you guessed it—games! You can tease your brain with word games and puzzle games; you can keep your inner child happy with classic arcade games; and you can even indulge your inner gambler with casino-style games. They’re free to play, too—all you need is a BettyTalk login. If you’ve already got one, you’re good to go; and if you don’t, it takes about three seconds to make one, after which you can game and game to your heart’s content. Need a break in the middle of the day? Betty Games. Need to kill a few minutes before heading out the door? Betty Games. Miss playing that weekly poker game with your best friend who just moved across the country? You guessed it—Betty Games.
We’ll be telling you more about Betty Games in the coming weeks, but for now, we figured we’d give you two a formal introduction. So: Bettys, meet Betty Games; Betty Games, meet the Bettys. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship!
