Yes, Kate Gosselin, we know that it’s tough returning to real life after reality TV. But sometimes, it’s just what needs to be done.

Kate Gosselin, why are you so ridiculous? Seriously. Yes, getting Kate Plus 8 yanked out from underneath you was tough. But it’s time to buck up and get back into the swing of things.

In the aftermath of the cancellation of Kate Plus 8, you see, Kate has been having trouble getting back to normal life. Earlier, she told the Huffington Post that she would do anything necessary in order to take care of her kids; but now, that’s proving to be a little more difficult than at first it seemed.

The trouble is that Kate may not really know what “normal life” is anymore. Her first choice replacement gig after the cancellation of Kate Plus 8 involved staying in television, but things aren’t rolling out quite the way she had planned. An insider told HuffPo, “She has approached many different networks, including pitching a travel show idea to her old network, TLC, but so far no one has said yes.” The insider went on to say that Kate “assumed that given her fame, producers and networks would be knocking her over with job offers and is, to say the least, very surprised that she hasn’t received a single one.”

Here’s the thing: I realize that when you work in reality TV, you’re opening yourself up to the scrutiny of the world. I also realize that by and large, you will be perceived in an unkind light, and that you will be written about extensively. Most of this writing will not be complementary. I know this, because I am one of those people doing the writing. And yes, when you’re bombarded with negative opinions about yourself every time you go online, you’re probably going to try to avoid said opinions as much as possible. At the same time, though, it’s generally a good idea to at least be AWARE of how the public perceives you, because it will directly affect your career later on.

Frankly, I’m surprised that Kate is surprised that the networks aren’t so quick to pick up another show with her. I suspect that the reason the networks are steering clear of her is because they know that right now, she’s not terribly popular with the public. In fact, we’re positively celebrating the fact that we will no longer have to deal with Kate Plus 8. And the networks are wise to this: They know that any show featuring her would likely tank right now because NO ONE WANTS TO WATCH HER ANYMORE. Which means, Kate, that you may want to consider realigning your perception of “normal life.” A life in television is far from the norm for most families, even large families, and even families with single parents. There ARE other ways around the problem. You used to be a nurse; why not try to exercise those skills and qualifications again?

Just to play devil’s advocate for a minute, though, here’s what a reality show casting director speaking to HuffPo had to say about the issue: “Like many reality stars Kate is in a very difficult position. Who wants to go back to a real day job after being paid to work three or four months a year. Everyone I have ever met on a reality show thinks it will never end. They quit their day jobs and assume they will become rich and famous. They do become infamous [but]– with the exception of Bethenny Frankel— they never become rich. Plus, who is going to hire them for a real job after they have made a fool out of themselves on TV?”

And I do see this side of things. I do. Kate, I know that it’s hard to go back to the way things were before the show when you’ve gotten so used to life during the show. And I also realize that it might be harder to get a “real” job again, purely because you chose to make your and your children’s life so public. But just because something is hard doesn’t mean you should give up. Having spent a whole lot of time job hunting myself, sometimes what you think you’ll be doing isn’t actually what you end up doing. So stop a minute. Step back. Rethink things. And be willing to roll with the punches.

Welcome back to real life.

  1. I agree with @NotMeanJustReal, and people can go on to respectable jobs after reality show stints. In fact, one of the freshman U.S. Congressman from Wisconsin is a former MTV Real World cast member (although his political positions are a bit crazy so one does wonder how he pulled that off with crazy positions and a crazy background on the Real World…)
