Redken Smooth Lock Collection

Bettys. You are NOT going to believe this. Get ready:

I think I found the perfect set of hair products for my incredibly weird hair. Shampoo, conditioner, styling products—the lot.

THIS IS A MOMENTOUS OCCASION.

So what are these miracle products? Redken’s new Smooth Lock collection ($14.50 – $16.50, available at professional salons; visit redken.com to find one near you). The whole kit and caboodle landed in our mailbox a little while ago, and I was the lucky one who got to try it all out. Was I gloating? Maybe just a little bit.

Anyway, the Smooth Lock Shampoo, Conditioner, Butter Silk, Stay Sleek, and Heat Glide are all intended to be used in conjunction with Redken’s new two-step, semi-permanent Smooth Lock in-salon service. The service uses amino acids and protein, as well as something called Keralink, to improve manageability and give long-lasting frizz control through up to ten shampoos. But! Even without the in-salon service, these products still go a loooooooong way to keeping normally untamable locks sleek and straight.

Redken Smooth Lock shampoo conditioner

I noticed a huge difference in my hair’s manageability just using the Smooth Lock shampoo ($14.50) and conditioner ($15.50) alone. On a day when all I styled was my bangs, putting the rest up when it was wet and letting it air dry, I noticed that the few sections I DID blow out were loads more cooperative than they usually are. Naturally, then, I couldn’t WAIT to see what would happen on a day when I added one of the products and styled my whole head.

Redken Smooth Lock heat glide stay sleek

I was not disappointed. I found the Heat Glide protective smoother ($16.50) worked best on days I was planning to hit my mane with a flat iron; not unlike other serum-type products, it’s intended to straighten hair, as well as protect from heat damage and keep it frizz-proof all in one go. It did all of those things for me; and even better, I didn’t end up with that weird sticky residue that can sometimes coat your strands with these types of products. The Stay Sleek leave-in cream ($16.50), on the other hand, was terrific on days I wasn’t planning to dry and straighten my whole head, but still wanted a little extra smoothing power. No-fuss, frizz-free locks that keep their rakish good looks all day (sometimes even for two days)? Count me in!

Redken Smooth Lock butter silk

Oh, and for those once-every-two-weeks-or-so times when your mane feels parched and dry? There’s this glorious thing called the Butter Silk intensive rinse-out treatment ($15.50). Essentially it’s a deep conditioner: Shampoo your hair; rinse it out; and then work the Butter Silk through and leave it in for ten minutes or so before rinsing it out (the instructions say anywhere between five and fifteen minutes should be fine; I found ten to be a happy medium). Its description says that it will leave you with “long-lasting straightness for a flawless, curtain-like effect”—and you know what? This description is, in fact, entirely accurate. Never before have I described my hair as “curtain-like,” but that’s exactly what it looked like by the time the Butter Silk got done working its magic on it.

Redken’s Smooth Lock collection is available at professional salons; check out their website to find a location near you. And in the event that you want to go all out and get the in-salon treatment, you’ve got a choice of three different finishing techniques depending on your hair’s texture: The Ultra Straight Technique, the Curl Defining Technique, and the Smooth Wave Technique. There’s also an Express Smooth Service for a quick fix that will keep your hair straight and smooth for up to three shampoos. Why keep fighting with your hair when you live in joyous harmony with it?
