Will You Splurge for the Environment?!
Is cheap clothing bad for the planet?
--Julie Ryan Evans
Many a fashionista on a budget has had to talk herself into buying apparel at Target, Payless, H&M and a host of other formerly tacky discounters. But what was once gauche is now cute...and well, cheap! And the budget retailers are right next to the high-style boutiques on the lists of those in the know.
But while designer-infused discount dressing may seem like a step in the right direction for the fashion of the masses, it may not be such a good thing for Mother Earth.
In a recent U.S. News and World Report article, Maura Judkis brings up this really interesting point for those with a clothing conscience:
"Fast-fashion purveyors make their millions by knocking off runway designs and marketing them to the masses." Judkins states. "Because they're so successful in copying styles and shipping them off to Middle America, the now escalated trend cycle forces designers and retailers to churn out more clothing than ever: Those who can afford the designer versions of a shoe or purse won't wear them once middle-schoolers in Ohio can buy them at the mall, and the knockoffs are made cheaply and won't last more than a season or two. So, the companies churn out new lines, and women wear them and dispose of them."
One answer to all this waste: buy more expensive pieces. "If we all spent a little more on clothing that wouldn't fall apart in the wash after one season, we'd find ourselves returning to the mall less frequently, decreasing the demand for and shipping of clothing," she continues. (Note to self: print this article out and show to husband next time he complains about an expensive purchase I make.)
While in theory (or Theory as the case may be) this makes sense, I'm not sure the masses of Americans who thrive on bargain hunting are going to turn down Zac Posen at Target for the greater good -- even if it is great to have an excuse to splurge once in a while.
bT: Are you willing to spend more on your clothing and buy less for the sake of the environment?

Take Me to Betseyville!
Betsey Johnson's bags for all occasions
-April Daniels Hussar
I want to live in Betseyville! One day, I just know it, Betsey Johnson herself is going to call me up and invite me to her villa in Mexico, where I'll get to try on all those fabulous dresses
and shoes and help Betsey design fabulous earrings by the pool whilst we sip Mojitos and accept grapes from pool boys.
Conveniently, Betsey has designed a line of ridiculously sassy and cute bags - from pocketbooks to weekender totes - so I'll be all set when that call does come.
Ready to drop anchor? Why, toss your sailor shorts, bikini bottoms (no need for tops out at sea right?) and Dramamine into the jauntily striped Ships Ahoy tote ($135).
Overnight in the city? Show your sense of humor with this
Call Me, Betsey barrel bag ($98). Those with no sense of humor need not apply.
For the sweeties out there: the Sweet Treats tote ($98) looks big enough for a change of clothes and a weekend supply of Junior Mints.
And THE perfect bag for my fantasy Mexico trip... the La Playa de Betsey tote ($110). Pompoms, metallic details, straw, leather, leopard print, and giant colorful flowers... it's like Betsey herself incarnate as a giant under-the-arm tote!
Now pardon me, I have to go practice my cartwheels...I'm sure my phone will be ringing any minute now.

To Scarf or Not to Scarf?
Just one addition to get Jennifer Aniston's cute look
-Julie Ryan Evans
I heart Jennifer Aniston, always have, and I'm quite sure we'd become quick bff's...if we ever met. But until then, I just admire her style from afar.
Here she is in a couple of recent photos looking effortlessly fabulous. And bonus! It's a totally easily outfit to emulate. Just add a scarf-the hot (or not?) summer accessory! Here's a cute one on shopbop.com.
You can also find less expensive ones like
this at the Gap.
It's the perfect airplane or movie outfit-if you're chilly, you can just unwind and wrap yourself with it.
Others are snubbing the scarf trend, especially after the Rachel Ray/Dunkin' Donut fiasco. But other style-makers (like moi) and the fashionistas at SheFinds still love it.

Has Your Beauty Routine Gone Green Yet?
It's time to turn over a new leaf!
-Paige Herman-Axel
There's no escaping the green movement. Everywhere we look, we're being offered health- and eco-friendly alternatives to the products we've come to depend on. Our bathroom vanities and makeup bags are no exception, and these green products can help you achieve your beauty goals while being kinder to the planet, so what are you waiting for? It's time to turn over a new leaf!
First things first, many people wonder about the difference between "organic" and "natural," especially when it comes to labeling on skincare products. To be called organic, the ingredients in the product must meet much more stringent standards in terms of its ingredients' growing practices and even how the product is transported to your local store. And there are a variety of organizations (such as the USDA and EcoCert) that certify these products so it's easy to know if you're getting a truly organic product.
Until now, there hasn't been a "natural" stamp of approval to let you know that your body lotion or night cream was derived from renewal sources found in nature, or free of synthetic, harsh or potentially harmful ingredients, but that's set to change. In the coming months, keep an eye out for a new seal from the Natural Products Association that lets you know that the product that claims to be natural actually makes the grade. To receive this seal, the product must be made with 95 percent natural ingredients and basically free of anything you can't pronounce. Keep an eye out for the NPA seal on Weleda, Burt's Bees, and Aubrey Organics products, among others.

Get Smart Style
Funky film-inspired fashion gear
-Stylelist.com
In honor of the recently released Get Smart banking at the box office, our friends at StyleList.com tracked down their Top 10 Fashion Gadgets inspired by the spy series. From x-ray laptop bags to solar-powered bikinis able to charge your iPod to collapsible heels, the list has everything for the gadget lover in all of us:
10. As a lethal beauty, Agent 99 couldn't resist Chanel's weapon-wear for the runway. It's fashion and function in one...IF you're a spy.
9. Skooba's Skreener Bag wouldn't fool modern-day X-ray machines, but looks like it might. Fashion is all about appearances.
8. Dr. Jenny Tillotson constructed this scent dress to mimic the body's circulation system. An interactive fabric
emits a selection of scents depending on your mood to create a personal "smell bubble." Probably not the most stealth of outfits.
7. All you need is love. Literally. The "Embrace Me" hoodie's logo pattern, made of a silver conductive fabric, is powered when two people embrace: it lights up while giving off a faint heartbeat sound.
6. Cleopatra's iconic gold arm band goes digital with the Nike+ SportBand. Runners can monitor distance, pace, time and calories burned and then plug into their laptop to download the data.
5. Charge your iPod Shuffle while you bask on the beach. NYU student Andrew Schneider's solar
bikinis are handmade and specifically designed to fit and flatter your body. A male version, with enough voltage to keep a six pack of beer cool (the original inspiration for the project) is in the works.
4. A tiny sensor strapped into the laces of the running shoes in the Nike+ Capable series makes it possible listen to real-time Nike audio feedback wirelessly through to the receiver.
3. Keep your data close to your heart and covered in bling with Swarovski's clever charm with a hidden jump drive
for stealing files (or just downloading party pics off friends' laptops, for us NON-spys ).
2. Ideal for slope-side sleuth work. Burton's Audex ski jacket is fitted with enough gear to fuel a private dj station. Bluetooth technology and a control panel with caller ID are hidden in the sleeve, and speakers and a microphone are concealed in the hood.
1. Proof that the future is finally here: fashion and comfort have merged. These Mary Janes are just one of several collapsible heels that have hit the market. Go from stilettos to kitten heels in a few clicks.

Summer-Perfect Makeup
Lighten up with a tinted moisturizer
-Paige Herman-Axel
I've never been a huge fan of foundation-except for going out at night and for special occasions. Even as a magazine beauty editor who had all of the latest cosmetic and skincare products at her fingertips (read: no need to actually buy anything-ever!), I have been loyal to N.V. Perricone Tinted Moisturizer for the past three years. Yes, I've actually bought this stuff, and at $65 a tube, it's not exactly cheap.
Surely you're wondering just why this stuff is so great. First, it comes in three easy-to-match shades; so let's just say everyone falls into light, medium or dark. Second it has SPF 15 so my skin is shielded from the sun without any white residue. I'll preface the "third" by saying I don't have a (naturally) flawless complexion, so I do need a little coverage to conceal the occasional blemish, rogue sun spot, and now, thanks to pregnancy, slight discoloration on my cheeks, under my eyes and above my lip. (Don't even get me started on the beauty side effects of being with child.) It evens out my skin tone so all I need is a light swipe of bronzer and I actually look like I've made an effort with my makeup. Lastly, it contains good-for-your-skin ingredients like firming DMAE, the antioxidant alpha lipoic acid to minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines, plus vitamin C to improve tone and texture.
Give it a try for yourself...You may be surprised at how this tinted moisturizer offers everything your foundation does-and more! $65, nordstrom.com

5 Tips for Your Best Summer Hair EVER
The King of Color’s summer hair gospel!
-April Daniels Hussar
A heavenly experience… putting yourself (and your hair) into the oh-so-capable hands of Frank Friscione (aka The King of Color), Color Director at the superbly chic Oscar Blandi Salon in NYC. Never mind for a minute that Frank looks like the cuter, younger brother of Colin Farrell, or that he has a star following (and by stars I mean STARS: Kathryn Heigl, Renee Zellweger, Stephanie Seymour to name a few) and just concentrate on the fact that your hair never had it – and you never looked – so good. Seriously.
I was treated to this treat of all treats a few weeks ago – and ladies – if you live in NYC – run, don’t walk to CALL THE OSCAR BLANDI SALON (212-988-9404) and make yourself an appointment! After a couple of blissful hours being tended to by the charming and funny Frank and the incredible staff at the salon, my hair went from BLAH to BEAUTIFUL. He took one pitying look at my grown-out highlights, my limp, lifeless split-ends, and knew just what to do… starting with an expert application of oil-based highlighting potion, followed by a blissful hair wash and gloss treatment, and ending with the BEST blowout ever. I seriously expected people to ask me for my autograph as I pranced down the street afterwards… yes that’s how fabulous I looked. Alas, I’m no blow-out artist (hold your tongues) but my highlights have maintained gorgeously… such a great way to kick off the summer!
If however, you don’t happen to live in the Big Apple (or, you’re not in the market for the price-tag that comes along with The Best Colorist EVER)… don’t fret. Frank revealed to us his top 5 tips for giving your hair its most fabulous summer yet. Pay close attention – your gorgeous self in the mirror will thank you for it.
1. Blondes need to take "extra" care this summer. If you're at the beach or hiking or doing anything (ahem) outdoors, be aware that your color will oxidize and you can lose tone. To maintain your highlights or blondeness, ONCE A WEEK, use an Oscar Blandi Gloss before you shampoo. This maintains shine and brightness and your color tone won't fade away.
2. Did you know that FINE hair oxidizes more than coarse hair? Here's a SUPER tip from Frank for ALL hair: Apply a dab of Neutrogena Oil Free SUNSCREEN in your hair. Yes, the stuff that you put on your face and body - use a bit ALONG WITH your hair styling products! In fact, when you're applying your sunscreen on the beach - keep going and use whatever's left over on your hands right through your hair.
3. WATER WATER everywhere! Before you go into the ocean or chlorinated pool, WET YOUR HAIR with FRESH WATER (like the outdoor shower water) FIRST. Saturating your hair with fresh water PRIOR to going into the ocean or pool PROTECTS your highlights from chlorine or whatever's floating around in lake or ocean water.
4. FRANK SAYS: NOW is the time to "brighten up your highlights" * GO LIGHTER * GET A LIFT * GO blonder if you're blonde; GO redder if brunette!
5. BUILD BABY BUILD. It’s VERY IMPORTANT to give yourself a protein treatment once a week (like this Marine Mud treatment during the spectacularly sunny summer months.

In Her Words
Faux Politics, Faux Pas
Mindless "counterculture" attire must die!
-Mayra David
Last summer, Cameron Diaz managed to offend the entire nation of Peru by committing a fashion faux pas on her visit. "Cute" as it was, the canvas bag with the Chairman Mao inspired red star and motto "serve the people" was not the best travel accessory, since Peru suffered decades of violence under Maoist Guerillas.
We all know it's cool to wear "politically themed" T-shirts. Urban Outfitters will sell anything in army green and communist red. We live in a society that carries its political triumphs, literally, on its sleeve. From German "Bundeswehr" winter coats (did they really get those from the Salvation Army? Nope.) to Che Guevara tees... how did a Marxist revolutionary who abhorred capitalism become one of the most recognizable T-shirt emblems in the western hemisphere? And nothing says "we won" like printing Fidel Castro's mug on canvas shopping bags shopping (ooh, cute idea?).
But there needs to be a limit. Sixteen year olds seek out these "counterculture t-shirts" have no idea what counterculture is.
On a more contemporary note, "Hillary and Obama" shirts have just hit the stores and I see "Vote now" t-shirts (with the words printed in English, Korean, Russian, etc.) all over the place. The wearers don't look old enough to vote, but I don't think they're sporting the shirts to make a political statement. And if I see one person sporting an Osama Bin Laden sweater, I swear I will report them to Homeland Security.
Finally, there is no better way to forget something than by commemorating it, but we shouldn't assume everybody has forgotten - or that everybody will forgive our ignorance. Even the coolest people (silence, Cameron lovers) couldn't pull it off without looking like an ass.

Goodbye to a Legend
Yves Saint Laurent dies at 71
-Julie Ryan Evans
This weekend I was saddened to read that Yves Saint Laurent passed away.
I can't say my closet is brimming with YSL. Really, the only items I own with those famous initials are a tube of lipstick and some eye shadow; and I may have owned a bottle of his Opium fragrance back in college. But just because his couture creations haven't yet fit within my budget, that hasn't stopped me from drooling over admiring his iconic work over the years.
I love this quote from him that so well describes the legacy he leaves:
"For a long time now, I have believed that fashion was not only supposed to make women beautiful, but to reassure them, to give them confidence, to allow them to come to terms with themselves."
Amen!

Celine Dion's Son's Hair
Why?
-Julie Ryan Evans
Have you seen Celine Dion's son's hair?
Well, now you have, and I'm curious what you think.
Personally, I offer no judgment--my own son didn't have a single haircut until he was almost 3. Those long, blond ringlets were just too cute. And I like longish hair on boys. But this? This is REALLY long hair...on a boy.
I guess I don't care--it's her son--I just don't get it. Taking care of girls' long hair is hard work--the tangles, the brushing, the shampooing, the drying. And really, he does look like a girl. A gorgeous girl, but still...
All I want to know is why. Is it a statement? I mean she's not exactly a head-banging rocker. Did she always wish for a girl? Is it for publicity?

Operation Exfoliate
Scrub your way to healthier, younger looking skin
-Paige Herman-Axel
What's standing between you and a radiant complexion? Odds are, a buildup of dull, dead skin. The fastest way to reveal smoother, younger looking skin is to exfoliate with a scrub or at-home peel, and these days you can find options at every price point. But before you scrub-a-dub-dub, make sure you're using the best exfoliant for your skin type.
Chemical exfoliation: Ingredients like glycolic, salicylic and lactic acids dissolve the "glue" that holds dead skin cells on the surface. As a result, these acids reduce the depth of surface wrinkles, smooth the skin and help keep skin in the clear. ONE TO TRY: B. Kamins offers glycolic acid treatments in 6, 8 and 10 percent concentrations so you can choose based on your sensitivity level. (If you're fair-skinned or this is your first foray into chemical exfoliation, start with the Glycolic-6.) Starting at $44, bkamins.com
Manual exfoliation: Also called physical exfoliation, this process relies on a rough surface or small abrasive particles that slough dead cells away to smooth and buff the skin. Because manual exfoliation can be potentially irritating, it's best avoided by those with sensitive skin or active acne. ONE TO TRY: Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion contains pharmaceutical-grade crystals that leave you with a radiant glow. $75, drbrandtskincare.com
Enzyme-based exfoliation: These products utilize enzymes that literally eat away dead skin cells to reveal smoother, fresher skin. And because enzymes have the ability to shut themselves off, they leave healthy skin intact and are great for more sensitive skin. ONE TO TRY: June Jacobs Papaya Purifying Enzyme Mask contains a variety of fruit enzymes to gently exfoliate while moisturizing and helping to tighten the skin on both the face and body. $60, junejacobs.com
Inside tip: When you remove the uppermost layers of the skin, you leave yourself more vulnerable to the damaging effects of the sun, so be sure to use SPF 30 on a daily basis while using exfoliants-or every day for that matter!

The arrival on my doorstep of another "New York Times bestseller" was pure karmic irony. I'd just had a heated discussion with my good friend, Paul, about weighty matters of politics, and spirituality when into my life comes a book titled How Not to Look Old.
I'm a serious bleeding heart when it comes to life‘s tragedies, but even I care that my 40-something facade doesn't reflect my inner 20-something. Long-time friends recall a time when I was quite the Makeup Maven and Hairstyle Trendsetter. Now I look more like the nice neighborhood lady who rescues stray dogs from her windchime-and-herb-laden front porch.
I tattled the book's title to Paul. His trademark response: "Step One: Shoot yourself when you're 30. There is no Step Two."
The author, Charla Krupp, a vivacious blonde television style editor of undisclosed age, lives with a husband; no mention of hair-graying kids. Inside, pages are slathered with exemplary celeb photos; they spend in a few months on spa treatments alone the amount that I earn in a year.
But Charla's not all about buying beauty; there are some succinct style tips that nudge you to choose differently from existing closets or makeup drawers. If you're into paying someone else to sculpt you their idea of pretty, she's listed professionals by city. Written in the tone of the old adage, "Friends don't let friends drive ugly," the book's a fast, easy read with some good ideas but, all in all, I've never wanted to look like the epitome of a television style editor.
I get a High Five for my recent purchase of updated eyewear. Thankfully I'd already decided on unlined, paler lips! However, I'd go to the mat on some items in her "Gotta Go!" lists. Sorry, but ankle bracelets, toe rings, multiple piercings... remember, ex-punks gotta keep some of their grit around, even if just to spark questions from the grandkids to prompt your stories about hard core days of yore.

Give your pout the pampering it deserves

A little extra attention can go a long way for your lips, and in addition to the moisturizing balm and sun protection you should be applying regularly, how about giving a lip exfoliant a try? Sure you can use a baby toothbrush and some Vaseline to smooth away the rough, dry upper layers of skin, but for a real treat, pick up 29 Cosmetics' First Crush Lip Scrub.
Not only are there crushed grape seeds to sweep away any sign of chapped lips, you get antioxidant protection from grape seed extract and surge of moisture. Simply apply, rub your lips together (or use your finger), tissue off and you're left with utterly kissable, slightly flushed lips that are ready for lipstick, gloss or just the lightest swipe of balm. $23, 29cosmetics.com

The perfect summer skirt
By: Julie Ryan Evan
For months now, I've been scouring boutiques, online sites and malls for the perfect summer skirt-not too long, but not too short (above the knee, but not up to my crotch!); not too full (so as to look like a bell) and not made of a material that requires ironing.
I didn't want it to have a ruffle or a fold-over waist-band (does anyone really need an extra layer right there?) or a drawstring (looks weird under fitted, longer shirts).
No buttons, no zippers, no pleats.
But other than that, I'm not picky.
It could be any color, any print, I just want to throw it on with tank tops and flip flops.
So there it was sitting was sitting in my inbox today inside my daily shopbop mail. Isn't it perfect? Isn't it Splendid?
I can't wait to order it!

Will you Jump into this Trend?
Not sold on Jumpsuits...yet
By: Julie Ryan Evans
So the style mavens at WhoWhatWeardaily.com are loving the new jumpsuit trend.
I personally haven't worn one since second grade, but I've learned never to say I'll NEVER wear something--hello return of the high-waisted jeans!
But when it comes to this one, while I think they're kinda cute, all I can think about is the INCONVENIENCE! I don't have the world's largest bladder and to get in and out these things each time I need to pee and to think about maneuvering them in a public bathroom...I'm just not sure I'm jumping for joy.
So what about you-do you see a jumpsuit in your future?![]()
The Tipping List
Skincare 101
Follow these basic steps for healthy, beautiful skin
By: Paige Herman-Axel
Perusing the beauty counters at your local department or drug store can be very overwhelming, and leave you begging for help. Fret not: skin care can be simple, and as easy as one, two, three.

Step One: Cleanse. Washing your face is more important than you think, and although those with drier skin can skip it in the morning (to help the skin retain natural oils), anyone with oily or blemish-prone skin should wash morning and night. But more isn't necessarily better: If you have oily skin, washing too much can actually stimulate your skin to produce even more sebum to compensate, leaving you more prone to breakouts. As a general rule of thumb, the dryer your skin, the creamier your cleanser should be. And if you're on the greasy side, opt for a gel or foam. One to try: Philosophy Purity Made Simple. $10, sephora.com
Step One-and-a-half: Tone. Toner gets mixed reviews with some beauty gurus extolling its virtues and others calling it a waste of time. To tone or not to tone is really up to you, but if you're willing to add another step to your routine, look at it as an extra rinse that removes any lingering dirt, makeup or cleanser. Food for thought: If you have dry or more mature skin, avoid toners that contain alcohol. One to try: Elemis Soothing Apricot Toner. $33, nordstrom.com
Step two: Treat. Think of serums as supplements for your skin. Whether you have one pesky issue or multiple problems, odds are there's a serum designed to address your concerns. From acne and wrinkles to sun spots and sagging, there are serums that can fit into just about any budget-yes, even at the drug store. One to try: Olay Total Effects 7 Signs Serum. $18.99, cvs.com
Step three: Moisturize. Your skin gets thirsty, too, and now that summer is upon us, it's more important than ever to moisturize. Oily and acne-prone skins should look for an oil-free formulation, and everyone-regardless of skin color-should opt for a daytime moisturizer that incorporates SPF. This also prevents age spots and discoloration, which make skin appear aged, keeping you looking younger longer! One to try: Lancome Bienfait Multi-Vital SPF 30 Lotion. $43, Lancome-usa.com
