Dick Clark

When news of Dick Clark’s passing at the age of 82 hit yesterday, it hit hard. Known affectionately as “the World’s Oldest Teenager,” the entertainment legend suffered a massive heart attack following an outpatient procedure at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. From American Bandstand to Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, there can be no denying the impact he had on the music industry in particular, as well as the entertainment industry at large; even though he had been in poor health since his stroke in 2004, it never stopped him from continuing to host his New Year’s Eve festivities in Times Square every year (even if it meant having to enlist the help of Ryan Seacrest to do it).

As celebrities took to the Twittersphere yesterday to express their love of the man and their grief at his passing, they honored his genius, his passion, and most of all, his kindness. Some of the reactions are profound, some of them are funny—but what they all have in common is a sense of how much Dick Clark touched the lives of their writers, whether they knew him in person or just grew up watching him on TV.

Dick Clark, we salute you. You will be greatly missed.

Ryan Seacrest, Dick’s New Year’s co-host, was one of the first to release a somber, heartfelt tribute:

Katie Couric

Joan Rivers

Mariah Carey

Dick was always willing to take a chance on an unknown quantity—something which Joe Mantegna has never forgotten:

Brad Paisley

Julian Lennon

Peter Facinelli

Alice Cooper

Danny Bonaduce’s tribute might just be my favorite of the bunch; it’s both funny and poignant, a wonderful remembrance of a terrific man:

Micky Dolenz

Rob Lowe

Janet Jackson

Montel Williams

I think Dick would have appreciated the ridiculousness of Patton Oswalt’s Highlander quip:

Patton Oswalt

William Shatner

Dane Cook

Tracie Thoms

And I think Seth Green’s words are the perfect ones to end on:

  1. William Shatner’s tweet is the ONLY one that means anything. All the other’s are just stupid self center idiot tweets. Morons! We all know how great Dick Clark was, and I hate to inform the idiots, but Dick is not reading their tweets. The only thing that matters is supporting his family and offering condolences, love and help.
