Bad-to-the-bone bangles for a good cause

-Mary Beth Sammons

Want to get your message across for a good cause and in a stylish way? Well, now you can, thanks to jewelry designer Jessica Kagan Cushman. Her funky fossilized-ivory bracelets with witty sayings are the rage of the Hollywood crowd and she’s making a statement on the philanthropic front. Moving beyond her badass bracelets (which sport quotes like “Let’s show this prehistoric bitch how we do things downtown”), she’s putting her fist and wrist in cancer’s face.

In an effort to take the “wristband for a cause” trend to a bolder level, this popular jewelry designer has lent her name and talent to support research for lung cancer with the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation. She recently debuted three signature bangles designed to raise awareness of and funds to wipe out lung cancer. Jessica, whose quotes and phrases come from books, movies and even NYC graffiti, transcribes them via scrimshaw onto bracelets made from fossilized wooly-mammoth ivory. She recently added this trio of messages to her bold billboard: “Hope triumphs over experience,” “Never, never give up on lung cancer” and “Imagine, no lung cancer.”

The bracelets sell for $150 each, and 100 percent of the proceeds goes toward lung cancer research. Not to mention … they’re really cute!
