How carefully do you pay attention to your jeans, Bettys? I’ll confess that generally, I tend not to think about them too much. Jeans are jeans, right?
We often think of tailoring being exclusive to office wear—but as I have lately discovered, this is definitely NOT the case. In fact, your jeans should fit you just as well as your suits. If they do, whether you dress them up or dress them down, you’ll always look fabulous. But how exactly does one go about finding the best fit? Easy: Go for a fitting. I recently got the chance to have a one-on-one denim fitting at the Lucky Brand show room in New York with Lucky’s Senior Director of Denim, Nico Peyrache—and the experience was eye-opening!
Lucky Brand has been around for about twenty years, and during that time, they’ve always been about the denim. Lately they’ve been expanding into other types of apparel, accessories, shoes, bags, kids, plus size, and so on—but the central focus always stays the same: The jeans are the company’s foundation, so everything else builds out of that. What’s more, Lucky believes that you should not only look good, but that you should FEEL good, too. Sexy meets comfort: Love it!
The show room is gorgeous, by the way; open and airy, it feels chic and put-together while still maintaining a super relaxed vibe. After giving me the lowdown on the brand, we got down to business: Jeans—or more specifically, how they fit me. The experience totally changed how I’ll be shopping for jeans in the future, so of I course I couldn’t NOT impart my newly-acquired denim knowledge to you, Bettys! Without further ado, here are Nico’s best tips for finding your perfect fit:
1. If it doesn’t make you comfortable, don’t wear it.
This is the number one rule when it comes to jeans (and to a lot of other things in life, too!). Lucky’s philosophy is all about combining the sexy looks you love with the comfiest fits you can imagine—and it makes PERFECT sense. Why go through life wearing uncomfortable clothing? There’s no need! All of the Lucky Brand styles I tried on were absurdly comfortable to wear.
2. Find your baseline.
Straight? Skinny? Boyfriend? Stretchy? Stiff? When it comes to finding the best style for you, first figure out what your baseline is. Once you’ve established it, then you can branch out to other styles to find out what you love and what you won’t go near. For example, I tend to lean towards skinnies, so the first pair of jeans Nico put me in was a classic skinny fit with a good amount of stretch: Lucky’s Charlie Skinny jeans. Using that pair as a baseline allowed us to see if I wanted something looser, less stretchy, or what have you. As it turned out, I quite liked the Charlie jeans; but either way, knowing how they fit made it easier to experiment with different styles later on.
