During Sunday night’s Golden Globes, we sighed and swooned over all the gorgeous designer gowns that graced our television screens. From Taylor Swift’s daring dark Donna Karan Atelier dress to Amy Poehler’s pantsuit, sleek ensembles were in on the red carpet. We chatted with editor and Fashion Police co-host George Kotsiopoulos about the evening’s biggest trends, fashion disasters, and how you can pull off some of the night’s edgier looks.

Betty Confidential: What were some of the major trends from Sunday night?

George Kotsiopoulos: There were so many! Lots of soft pastels, like what we saw on Jessica Chastain in the beautiful Calvin Klein Collection gown that was custom made for her. Lots of black, which is unusual for the red carpet – we don’t see that much black. Nicole Kidman, for example, looked absolutely exquisite in a corseted Alexander McQueen look. It was fabulous. There were lots of blushes like Amy Adams in a beautiful mermaid Marchesa gown. There was tons of white like Anne Hathaway in Chanel. There were a few cutouts: Emily Blunt in Michael Kors had great cutouts on the side. I think her body looked amazing. And red! Red was like the color of the night. There was a lot of red, like with Golden Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture, looking quite lovely, I think.

BC: What did you think of Jennifer Lawrence’s belt? I noticed she had a black belt on her red dress – what did you think of that?

GK: It was actually a gold belt. On the runway, it wasn’t shown with a belt – they added the belt afterwards. I think it was cool; it gave it a little bit of an edge. I think people were more concerned about the chest area – it was one of those things where you either loved it or didn’t love it, but it was an architectural element, very editorial; it was a risk on the red carpet, but I think it looked great. She looked really cool.

BC: Were there any unexpected trends from the night?

GK: The biggest unexpected trend for me was that Angelina Jolie’s leg seemed to be popping up everywhere! Lots of leg on so many girls – those thigh-high slits– it wasn’t even thigh high, it was more like hip high, so there was a lot of skin. Also Jessica Chastain with her plunge and her bare back – I think lots of bare backs, lots of legs, and anytime you’re showing off skin like that, you just want to make sure that it is beautifully hydrated.

This is why I love Suave Skin Solutions body lotions, because they just hydrate you all day long. This is a really long evening for these girls. They start at 2 or 3pm getting ready, and then they’re going until one in the morning. You really just want to make sure their skin looks fresh and beautiful and hydrated because trust me: If your skin doesn’t look beautiful, it doesn’t matter how great you look in your dress, because we will clock you on Fashion Police.
