Dara gets her groove: This 41-year-old mom dives into the pool to prove 40-something women rock
-Mary Beth Sammons
Talk about getting back into the groove at midlife. Dara Torres won her first nine Olympic medals in the 1980s, when today’s mega-hotshots – such as Olympian Michael Phelps – were in diapers. Now, this 41-year-old mom of a 2-year-old, who retired from swimming THREE times, is diving deep into the pool to prove that 40-something women aren’t exactly aging bodies or peri-menopausal patients filling waiting rooms. If anything is flashing hot for you 40-somethings, it’s you. Dara is proving that you rock.
Touted to take a couple medals in the next Olympics as “the oldest female swimmer in the history of the Olympic games,” she’s just tried out for her fifth Olympic team. Not bad for a mom of a toddler! In fact, last November, Dara broke the American record in time trials in Germany for freestyle swimming.
Swimmers refer to her feats as the “splash and dash,” but watching Dara streak down the pool – and set new performance goals for women in their 40s, – can’t help but challenge you to dive in, hit the water and go for everything you deserve in your life.
