Work It, Girl
Go Gray, Girl, Go Gray
Gray is the new black around the office
Black, black, black. We’ve been hearing since time immemorial that every girl needs basic black pieces in her wardrobe. Then, to confuse the issue further, every season it’s a new color that’s supposed to take the place of that staple. “Red is the new black!” “Blue is the new new black!” I’m still trying to figure out what was wrong with the old black, but I digress. Ladies, I present to you your true new black: gray.
Now, before you start screaming that gray is just a black knockoff, I ask you to consider how many different grays you’ve seen. Gray can work for you in all the circumstances that black can. Here’s how to get the most out of gray:
• The ensemble
Buy your gray in an essential four- or five-piece set, consisting of a jacket, shell top or sheath, pants, skirt, and (like your vowels) sometimes, a button-up vest. A gray suit can make you memorable in an interview, distinguished from the parade of black that the hiring manager has probably seen all week. Bebe (ABOVE) has some killer suits and separates, and they’re offering a sitewide 25% “friends and family” discount until 11/16.This Tahari gray sharkskin jacket (BELOW) and pant suit is a total steal at $99 (down from $320). This Calvin Klein skirt suit (BELOW) is also a steal at $99. The blazer would look great with jeans and the skirt works for winter with some killer boots.
• Dress it up … or down
Got a dinner or office party to go to? You’re covered – simply add appropriate jewelry. You can even get crazy and pair a piece with jeans for a night out. And, when the IT guy from the fourth floor shoves his hand into the mainframe and electrocutes himself, you’ll have something to wear to the funeral that stands out yet keeps you from being garishly gussied up.
• Find your best gray
Cool skin tones can chill in a blue-based, icy or smoky-lavender gray, while warmer skin tones can heat up the place in a deep charcoal.
• Mix and match
Steer clear of other neutral tones. You don’t want to look like a walking rainy day. Black is boring, white is tediously unexciting, more gray is lifeless, and brown … if you dare to try wearing most browns with gray, you are beyond help and should enlist the services of a wardrobe coordinator – stat.
Classy, refined and stylish, gray gives you a new way to be grown-up. Go gray, girls, and discover a whole new world of color.
