Happy 30th, Michael Kors!

Spring’s coming, my beauties! Michael Kors, one of my all-time favorite designers, is celebrating his 30th anniversary this year.  And, as your Cyber Main Gay, I’ve been dreaming about the upcoming Spring fashion collections from all the designers that you’ll be trying on soon at a store near you. As I’ve been researching trends, I started to think about the movies that have really influenced the fashion runways across the globe. There have been many since the early 1920’s, starting with silent film star Clara Bow who was the first “IT” girl, but when it came down to brass tax and tea, my two hands down favorites are Funny Face (with Audrey Hepburn) and The Thomas Crown Affair (with Rene Russo).

Funny Face (1957) catapulted Audrey into the stratosphere as a fashion icon. Harvey HelmsShe would be immortalized after the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Hubert de Givenchy idolized Audrey. She was fabulous in everything she wore. More appealing at the time was that she wasn’t a typical beauty. The phrase “Gamine” was coined in tribute. A pixie-like creature that you can’t take your eyes off. The clothes in the film were magnificent, and what was truly amazing were the fashion scenes shot by Richard Avedon. Perhaps the best fashion photographer of his time.  Here’s a photo montage from Funny Face on IMDB.com.

As I fast forward to now, I remember sitting in a movie theatre in New York watching The Thomas Crown Affair in 1999. Great remake and story, but I couldn’t take my eyes off Rene Russo and this incredible wardrobe in which she was dancing across the screen. Every scene was just more non-stop fabulousness.  The ballroom scene with her in that see-through black gown … I gasped and almost had a gay fashion fit! My popcorn went flying everywhere! I couldn’t wait to get to the end of the movie to see the credits. Hurry up!  There it was. The name of the master who created this parade of beauty? Michael Kors.
