How Do You Define Family? Tell Us and Win $100!

Family, friends, and wine. What's better than that?

crest-friend When I think of “family,” I think of two things, simultaneously and equally. I think of my literal family: My beloved daughter and husband, my parents and sisters, and my relatives, whether via blood or marriage. At the same time, I think of my “family” — that is to say, those friends who are like family to me, who are of my heart, and on whom I depend utterly. When Gallo Family Vineyards invited me talk about “family,” and to check out their “Family Crest Creator,” it was this group of wonderful, crazy, lovely and always-have-my-back girlfriends that sprang to mind.

As a California girl living on the East coast, my network isn’t typical. There are my old, dear friends still on the West coast, and there are the people who have become like family to me here over the last 12 years, during which I’ve put down strong and deep roots. I keep in touch with my far away friends pretty well through Facebook and texting, but nothing compares to seeing them in person. And I’ve made friends here largely through shared interests and experiences, whether it’s fellow moms on the playground, partners and girlfriends of my husband’s friends met at parties, or the incredible women I’ve been lucky enough to work with. But what deepens all of these friendships is time spent just being together … and very often, that involves a great meal and a bottle of wine!

Truly — for me, nothing beats a dinner with either a best girlfriend or a whole group of them. Whether it’s a home-cooked meal, a delivered pizza, or a night out at a restaurant, there’s just something about sharing a meal and a glass of wine (or two!), isn’t there?

Ok, so are you wondering about this “Crest Creator” thingie? It’s really fun! Gallo Family Vineyards came up with it as a way to create, share and download personalized family crests for ALL your families (whether that includes the people you’re related to, or simply the people that you relate to in life!).

“We designed the Crest Creator to be something fun that pays homage to families, however they’re defined,” Stephanie Gallo, third-generation Gallo family member and Vice President of Marketing at Gallo Family Vineyards says. “It’s our way of saying thanks and celebrating all the families who have invited us to the table for the past eighty years.”

They’ve also partnered with, so you can order cool stuff printed with your crest. It’s such a fun idea — I made the one above with my best girlfriends — near and far — in mind. I really got into it — they have over 17 templates to choose from, and 300 icons you can add to your crest. BUT it’s totally easy to do and not at all overwhelming. They did a great job with the user interface and giving a lot of options but not too many! I chose the motto “A Friend Is Another Self,” which in the translation of a Latin phrase that I love. Once you create your crest, you can save it, share it, and also click on the “shop” button, which takes you to a page on filled with items you can order with your crest. SO FUN! I’m thinking about the notecards and coffee cups for my friends, but there’s everything from water bottle, to iPhone cases and sweatshirts. mug mug-crest-gallo I am totally going to go back and create more – I think my nuclear family needs a motto! And maybe the BettyConfidential family needs one too! What’s that you say? You want to go create your own? It’s free! As long as you’re 21 or older, you just head over to and get started.

And just to make it even more fun, we’ve got $100 to give away, which you can use however you like — maybe at on items with your new crest! To enter to win, just tell us in the comments below: “What is your definition of family?”

  1. My definition of family is closeness and support. People you can go to when times get tough and always have someone who will care and listen to you.

  2. To me, family would be the people who love you and accept you just the way you are. It's not what runs through your veins, it is what lives in your heart!

  3. Family means good times, warm sharing and quality bonding every chance we get…from a simple morning share over coffee to a long holiday weekend of bonding, maximizing moments and creating lasting memories for future fun.
