I Have Everything I Need
By: Clarice Joos
Sometimes the simplest things are the truest. As retailers whisk Halloween out from under us only to shove us into the glut of consumerism that has become the holiday season, this simple phrase is my savior: “I have everything I need.”
Stores are like a Vegas casino to me. Whether it’s a shoe store or a supermarket, I lose all sense of time and financial status. My eyes glaze over, and all I can see are things, things, glorious things that I don’t know how I was ever happy without. And if I see a choice item on sale, then how can I possibly pass up an opportunity to save money on something I never even knew I needed until that very moment?
How do I find my way through the fog of materialism that becomes overwhelming at this time of year? I pull my eyes away from the sea of stuff, take a deep breath, and think or actually say that one sentence, “I have everything I need.” Then, I think about why that is true. Not only do I already have more clothes, shoes, jewelry, home accessories, food, etc. than anyone truly needs, I am far richer than that. My family and I are healthy, safe, comfortable, housed, fed and loved. And even better… we have not had to suffer the kind of devastating loss that Hurricane Katrina or the recent wildfires in California brought to so many people… the kind of loss that suddenly throws these things into stark perspective.
