Back when I was a kid, Capri Sun’s Juice drinks were THE COOL DRINKS to have in your lunch. Like, there was nothing cooler. That unique pouch, the sharp little straw, the tangy, awesome flavors. Nothing compared! I remember this very vividly because, as you can probably guess, I was never the cool kid with the Capri Sun drink. Oh no. I sort of forgot about the brand for a while once I graduated from school and no longer had to stress out about being the only kid with sprouts on whole wheat in my lunch bag (Mo-ommm!), but now that I have a grade-schooler of my own, I am amazed to see that Capri Sun drinks are YET AGAIN the cool drinks! And, much to my glee, I am totally happy to pack them in my daughter’s lunch box, because not only do they meet my picky nutritional standards, they mean I am doing something cool. Yes!
Put simply: Made with no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives, Capri Sun drinks are something I can feel good about giving my kid. They have a few different options these days (check them out at Capri Sun’s website or Facebook page); the one we get at at my house is Capri Sun 100% Juice, which contains, yes, 100% juice. No added sugar or weird extra crap — and my daughter loves them because they taste great and, again, they’re cool. One pouch contains up the equivalent of one serving of fruit, with nothing else in there.
Now, I will say that I like to be the cool mom, but I’m also really up front with my daughter about why she’s allowed to have certain things on a regular basis, and not others. That is to say, I don’t try to pass Capri Sun 100% Juice drinks off as some kind of extra cool yet bad for you forbidden treat that I’m “letting” her take to school while I sneakily laugh at how healthy I’m being. I don’t buy that school of thought at all. She knows that Capri Sun 100% Juice drinks are acceptable to me because the pouches contain only juice, and the serving size is reasonable. I hope this is a lesson she’s absorbing along the way, so that one day when she’s in charge of deciding everything she eats and drinks (Ack!), she’ll know making healthy decisions doesn’t have to mean always (or ever!)choosing the boring, un-fun option. Because it doesn’t!
Do you remember drinking Capri Sun drinks when you were a kid?
