iPad Name Draws Feminine Hygiene Jokes
The latest Apple device has an unfortunate name.
Female bloggers are wondering if there are any women working at Apple Inc., because maybe they would’ve spoken up about how naming their latest gagdet the iPad could be a bad decision.
Tech geeks had been guessing what name Apple would give the new handheld keyboard-less computer for months now. Some thought it would be called iSlate; others, iTablet. But once Apple announced the iPad at an invitation-only event on Wednesday, the blogosphere went nuts with feminine hygiene jokes.
“iTampon” became the third most popular trending topic on Twitter that day. Jokes about going to the store to stock up on iPads also ensued. It’s as if the blogosphere morphed into a seventh-grade boy.
Despite its peculiar name, the people at Apple and techies alike agree that the iPad will definitely sell.
“If you think of iPods in 2001, we probably got the same smirks. I think the jokes will disappear.” said Stephen Hutcheon, editor at The Sydney Morning Herald.
Apple could’ve called the iPad “a mangled baby duck” instead, says Andy Ihnatko, a tech columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times, and people would still buy it. “With the right device, marketing doesn’t really matter.”
Still, we’d like to revel in the sillyness that is the iPad name for just a little bit longer. Check out the video below – MadTV has been making fun of the iPad before it even existed. (CNN)
