After long last, we have our Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in place for the ’50 Shades’ film adaptation. Once it hits Twitter you know it’s official and on Monday, E.L. James, author of the 50 Shades of Grey series announced in two separate tweets that the leads for the film adaptation of 50 Shades had been cast! Ben & Kate star Dakota Johnson will take the role of Anastasia Steele while Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy will be Christian Grey.
Now I won’t lie – when I first heard that production was being put into play on the film version of 50 Shades of Grey I got very stressed out over who would be cast for the main characters Christian and Anastasia.
For anyone who hasn’t read the series, here’s the CliffNotes version: Anastasia Steele, a shy young college student, falls head over heels for the brilliant businessman Christian Grey. There’s just one small catch to their relationship… Christian is much less of the hearts and flowers kinda guy and much more into having full control in the bedroom, of the BDSM variety.
Three steamy books in the series by E.L. James and 70 million copies sold later and 50 Shades was set to hit the silver screen by August 1st, 2014 with Sam Taylor-Wood slated to direct. But who would be our Christian and Anastasia?! The casting war for the leads was intense with rumors circulating that anyone from Matt Bomer to Ian Somerhalder and even Ryan Gosling could be the next Christian while Emma Watson, Alexis Bledel and Lucy Hale were speculated as contenders for Anastasia.
So you see now why I got so stressed out – just the right actors were needed for these roles and I wasn’t sure any of the rumored ones could do the trick! A few hours post Tweets, I’m beginning to warm up to the news though. Outside of Ben & Kate, Johnson had a very funny turn in last year’s The 5 Year Engagement (she was Jason Segal’s Zumba-obsessed girlfriend) while Hunnam fought off underseas monsters in a robot suit (while also allowing plenty of hot, hot, hot shirtless screen time too) in Pacific Rim earlier this summer.
What do you think of the casting choices? Do you think Dakota and Charlie have what it takes when it comes to aiming to please audiences?
