Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Malin Akermann: We Go to the VMA Awards After-Party
Our LA correspondent goes to the coolest party of the year. Like, srsly.
It’s Sunday night at a little past 11 pm. I’m wearing a satin little black dress designed to make me look like I’m bringing sexy back but is actually two sizes too small for me. My plus one, my roommate who described getting dressed as “like getting ready for Vegas,” and I are heading down the hall of the SLS Hotel lobby in Beverly Hills to the bathroom after being on the dance floor. But then! A girl with a flash of lilac-colored hair, big eyes, and stiletto heels walks down the hall in the opposite direction. I grab my roommate and hiss, “That’s Katy Perry! We’re going back!”
Only for the MTV Video Music Awards after-party would I trade a bathroom visit for trailing a Teenage Dream.
My history of “attending” award after-parties prior to this event was limited to me locking myself in my bedroom and watching E! while shouting at the TV that no, Kelly Osbourne’s dress was NOT HOT. So I was new to the experience when invited to the 4th Annual Music Awards After-Party for the MTV VMAs, being thrown by the House of Hype. Though I stopped listening to/watching MTV years ago, I felt owed it to my 11-year-old self, who was a pop princess devotee. (I find in my life when I agree to go somewhere or do something, it isn’t always just to satisfy myself now. It’s for the younger version of me. I’ve gotta make her proud.)
Also it was for my new gig with BettyConfidential — a pretty sweet kick-start perk, no?
It was a killer party. I rubbed elbows with eyeballed from afar celebrities including Britney Spears, Kelly Rowland, Katy Perry, Akon, Mark Salling, Malin Akerman, Rose McGowan, Emma Roberts, and Chord Overstreet. DJ Cobra and DJ Ire spun tunes, and guests sipped on Redbull and Ciroc throughout the evening and toasted to Katy Perry as Jamie Foxx took over the microphone to give her a special shout out. He then did a surprise live performance for the crowd. Yes.
