Keira Knightley Anna Karenina gown

Keira Knightley has done approximately a bajillion period pieces over the course of her career (okay, so “a bajillion” isn’t exactly a real number, but shhhhh), and since she’s so well-versed in how to carry off a corset, it only makes sense that she’s kept a few of her costumes. Word on the street is that her private collection includes dresses from Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, and The Duchess; she even has a couple of the gorgeous vintage white lace dresses used in A Dangerous Method. Will she keep something from her newest flick, Anna Karenina? It’s pretty likely that she will—but we DO know that there’s one dress from the film she WON’T be getting.

But at least it’s for a good reason! According to the Hollywood Reporter, Keira and Anna Karenina’s phenomenal costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, donated the glorious burgundy ball gown seen above to London’s Victoria and Albert Museum for their upcoming Hollywood Costume exhibit, which will run from October 20, 2012 through January 27, 2013. Bringing together over 100 costumes from across a century of film-making, the exhibition will explore the central role costume design plays in cinematic storytelling. Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s? Got it. Captain Jack Sparrow of the Pirates of the Caribbean films? Got that, too. Harry Potter? You betcha. From the silent films of Charlie Chaplin all the way up to the high-tech wonders of Avatar, this exhibit is certainly not to be missed.

Keira bid farewell to the spectacular Anna Karenina dress in style, posing alongside it on Tuesday in a modern outfit done up in similar colors. The gown itself has long sleeves, a ruffle finish at the back, and a gigantic skirt—and we can just imagine how much fun it would be to waltz around a grand ballroom wearing it (though we could probably do without the corset).

If you find yourself in London anytime between October and January this year, be sure to check out Hollywood Costume—as well as everything else the V&A has to offer!

Anna Karenina hits cinemas on November 16.
