We’ve all heard the dieting advice to have several small mini-meals throughout the day, so we won’t feel hungry. But according to a new study, bigger is probably better when it comes to meals, even for people who are on a diet.

Subjects in the study, conducted by Purdue University researchers felt more satisfied with three normal-size meals than with six smaller ones, MSNBC reported. Although the subjects of the study were men, the results could have implications for women as well.

Researcher Dr. Heather J. Leidy, now at the University of Missouri, said that although there’s a lot of media talk about eating smaller, more frequent meals, “these mini-meals that everyone is talking about don’t seem to be beneficial as far as appetite control.”

Dieters taking part in the study ate 750 fewer calories per day than they normally did. All the dieters ate the same high-protein food and the same amount of food; the group was split into those who ate three normal-size meals five hours apart, and six smaller meals two hours apart.

The subjects who ate three meals a day reported feeling fuller in the evening and late at night – two traditionally risky times for dieters. (MSNBC)
