When Patrica Brett started her mission to design swimwear for breast cancer survivors, there were people who didn’t understand the need for this type of fashionable and functional swimwear. She persisted, and now women around the world feel beautiful in her suits.

When Patricia Brett created Veronica Brett, a line of gloriously sexy, well-fitting and uber chic swimwear for breast cancer survivors and women who’ve had risk reducing mastectomies, the idea seemed revolutionary at the time. Would women who’ve had a mastectomy want to look sexy? The answer was a resounding, “Yes!”

As a trained architect, Patricia never thought she’d become a swimwear designer, but breast cancer has been a repeating theme in her life, and it ultimately inspired her business of helping women feel beautiful.

Patricia’s family has dealt with breast cancer for generations. The women in her family carry the rare BRCA 1 gene, which predisposes the carrier to having breast cancer (they have an 85 percent chance of developing the disease). As a child, Patricia lost Veronica Brett (the line’s namesake) and two other beloved aunts to the disease.

As adults, both Patricia and her sister Regina were tested and found out they carried the gene. Around that same time, three of Patricia’s cousins also learned they carried it!

When she was 39, Patricia underwent a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. a preventative measure that many women who carry BRCA 1 undertake, as it stops the disease from taking hold in their bodies.

It was only when her young 29-year-old niece underwent the same preventative procedure (opting NOT to get reconstructive surgery) and bemoaned the loss of her “sexy clothes,” that Patricia’s mind turn to design…. and that first swimsuit kickstarted an entire company.

“It just struck me, after everything else breast cancer survivors have to contend with, finding something to wear shouldn’t be yet another challenge,” Patricia shares on her website.
