The Tipping List
Spring activities to buff you up
By: Jessica M. Love
Ah, spring. A time to soak up sunshine, a chance to breathe in fresh air. But rather than just bask in the sunlight, why not get outside to play during the pristine days ahead? So many spring activities are fun, but guess what? They buff you up. Tie your hiking boots, put on the baseball cap and set up the volleyball net – it’s time to spring that body into top shape.
Softball Heard about a softball league with co-workers? Sign up! While you’re networking and enjoying this classic American pastime, you’ll also build extra strength in your biceps and triceps as you hit home runs, pitch and catch. Also, be sure to run your bases and crouch low in the outfield to tighten up your hamstrings and glutes.
Hiking The days are long, the light is bright, and the scenery is breathtaking. Spring weekends are great for spending time outdoors, especially when you can take a hike around your local lake, river or oceanfront. The scenery fills you with a sense of majesty and peace, and the hike uphill will sculpt some killer quads and calf muscles. Uphill climbs are also great for getting a rock-hard booty and shaving off the infamous “muffin top.”
“Beach” Volleyball Regular volleyball is great exercise, but beach volleyball is even better. As you play in the sand, it sinks and forces you to exert more energy as you run, jump and shuffle. No beach to play on where you live? Try your city park – sand volleyball courts can be found in parks around the country. Get ready for some friendly competition beach-style while you increase your leg strength and spike your way toward a more ripped upper body.
