Jon Bon Jovi

Were you perplexed by the story that started circulating the other day claiming that Jon Bon Jovi was dead? Yeah, us too. But hey, don’t worry—everything’s okay! Jon Bon Jovi is very much still alive and kicking and Tweeting to prove it! See?

Jon Bon Jovi

If heaven is New Jersey, I don’t ever want to go there.

Yep: Jon was the victim of a celebrity death hoax. On Monday, a post appeared on a WordPress blog called “DailyNewBlogInternational” claiming that Jon was “pronounced dead today after paramedics found him in a coma at his Empress Hotel.” The cause? Cardiac arrest. The news spread like the proverbial wild fire, quickly becoming a trending topic on Twitter and generally taking over the Internet. The explosion was understandable; how on Earth can we be expected to live in a world where Jon Bon Jovi is no longer livin’ on a prayer? Horrors!

But, perhaps unsurprisingly, the news was revealed to be a hoax. Indeed, not only is Jon alive, as evinced by his rather entertaining Twitpic, but moreover, the originating post appears to have used text copied from the 2009 story run by the Los Angeles Times announcing the death of Michael Jackson. The originating post has since been taken down, of course, and the LA Times has said that they’re looking into the matter.

So what the heck is DailyNewBlogInternational? We, er… don’t really know. It didn’t exist before Monday, it’s riddled with grammatical errors and typos, and in addition to the Jon Bon Jovi death hoax, it’s now touting a story stating that Megan Fox is HIV positive. Whether it’s purely a rumor-mongering site or whether its owner is a strange, deluded individual who actually believes what he or she is writing remains to be seen. Either way, though, it’s really, really weird and should be taken with a very large grain of salt. Or possibly an entire salt cellar.

Oh, and for those still doubting that Jon is alive, he performed at the Hope Concert at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ on Monday night. Of course, it’s still possible that fervent believers will make the argument that Bon Jovi is actually using a clever substitute who looks and sounds exactly like Jon Bon Jovi. Never underestimate the ferocity of a die-hard conspiracy theorist…
