Silver-Based Beauty

Treat yourself inside and out

-Paige Herman-Axel

Being in the beauty biz for almost a decade now, I’ve heard some pretty out-there stuff. It seems like some beauty product company or another has found a good use for just about everything, from diamonds (my opinion, save them for jewelry), mud (it does more than just make you dirty), bacteria (probiotics aren’t just for Gwyneth Paltrow), and even crazier ingredients that would make you say, You want me to put what on my face?

When silver hit the scene, it was met with a lot of skepticism from beauty editors and doctors alike-until we saw the research. It’s not just an ingredient to add cache or a few zeroes to the price tag; there’s hard evidence of real health benefits.

First and foremost, silver kills bacteria – it’s now used in FDA-approved burn dressings and can replace chlorine in pools. Keep an eye out for anti-bacterial silver-based hair- and toothbrushes in the years to come as well. Other studies have shown that silver plays a role in preventing disease-just ask the Chinese who have been using it for over 8,000 years.

You don’t have to head to the Far East or some back-alley beauty boutique to get your daily dose of silver-based beauty. A Google search yields scores of offerings, but luckily I’ve done the legwork and found the cream of the crop for you.

Nano Silver Cyclic Soap
Ideal for oily and acne-prone skin, Cyclic Soap is a perennial best seller (it’s NYC’s Zitomer), and it has a cult following to match. It kills the bacteria that cause blemishes, helps shrink pores, removes make-up like a charm thanks to the positively and negatively charged ions, moisturizes without clogging pores, and eliminates body odors caused by microorganisms on the skin. Need I say more? $45, zitomer.com

D’Arcy Laboratories Formula No. 05 Elemental Elixir
