Sir Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell Got Married!
Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney wed his girlfriend of four years, Nancy Shevell, on Sunday. Congratulations!
Sound the wedding bells, because Sir Paul McCartney got married this weekend! He and his fiancée, Nancy Shevell, wed during an afternoon ceremony at the Old Marylebone Town Hall in London on Sunday.
Paul and Nancy have been dating since 2007 and got engaged in May. Though the ceremony was mobbed by fans and journalists outside, inside, it was a quiet affair attended by 30 of the couple’s friends. According to People, the wedding guests included Nancy’s son Arlen, Paul’s brother Mike, Ringo Starr and his wife Barbara Bach, and George Harrison’s widow Olivia. Paul’s youngest daughter, 7-year-old Beatrice, served as flower girl, while his second oldest, Stella (of course) designed some of the wedding gear, including Paul’s snazzy navy blue suit and Nancy’s shoes.
The new Lady McCartney is a wonderfully unexpected woman; no mere hanger-on to the rich and famous, she’s had a long and busy life and career before her marriage to Paul. Not only is she quite the business woman—she’s vice president of her family’s business, New England Motor Freight, Inc., as well as a member of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority board—she’s also a divorcee herself: She was married to New York attorney Bruce Blakeman for over 20 years. She’s also Barbara Walters’ cousin, which is an added bonus. Barbara, by the way, adores Nancy; “I love her very much. She’s my cousin,” she said on The View. “She’s my second cousin. Her mother, who died, was my first cousin. And I have been very close to this young woman.”
As something of a side note, it’s worth noting that Sunday would have marked fellow Beatle John Lennon’s 71st birthday had he not been shot down by Mark David Chapman in 1980. Did Paul and Nancy choose that day as their wedding date on purpose? We don’t know, but either way, how poignant to memorialize a fallen friend by celebrating with a wedding.
Paul has been married twice before; his first wife, Linda, passed away from cancer in 1998 after 29 years of marriage, and his second, Heather Mills, ended disastrously. Let’s hope three times’ the charm!
Congrats to the happy couple!
