What Would Debbie Do

Snooping Girlfriend

Dear Debbie,

I live with my boyfriend of five years. One time after he used my computer, I noticed that he accidentally let the e-mail application save his password. Now it’s stored in my computer. When he’s in class at night I check it! It’s become almost like a compulsion and a definite part of my routine. I can’t stop! I saw the number of asterisks that made up his password and right away knew that it was our pet’s name. I use that password for his Myspace account, his online banking, everything! Should I confess and tell him to change his passwords…is it really so wrong just to try to keep tabs on what my man is doing?

Dear Jenna,

Sounds like you hit paydirt. Every woman’s dream— access into the private portals of her boyfriend’s life. Let’s face it, we’ve all wanted to take a peek, but the problem is that for you, it’s now become an obsession. Interestingly, you didn’t mention anything nefarious. No strange e-mails from unknown women; no big withdrawals from his bank account; nothing that would suggest that he’s dishonest, duplicitous or even remotely untrustworthy. So enough. He sounds like a good guy. You’re invading his privacy. Do your relationship a favor and stop. Your boyfriend has given you no reason to mistrust him. Pat yourself on the back for being with an honest guy and stop what you’re doing. NOW. It’s just not cool.
