Susan Sarandon

Susan Sarandon may be an incredible actress, but her most notable quality perhaps isn’t her talented on screen—it’s that she’s never afraid to speak her mind, even if it’s a thought that most wouldn’t dare say. Scratch that—ESPECIALLY if it’s a thought that most wouldn’t dare say.

Case in point: Susan dropped by the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, NY on Saturday for an interview with fellow actor Bob Balaban. According to Newsday, she touched on Occupy Wall Street, her encounters with the NYPD during the Amadou Daillo shooting in 1999, and the current Pope, Benedict XVI—whom she called a “Nazi.”

How, exactly, did the Pope make his way into the conversation? Well, Apparently Susan was talking about Dead Man Walking, the 1995 film she made based on the anti-death-penalty book by Sister Helen Prejean. During the filming, Susan had sent a copy of the book to the Pope. “The last one,” she clarified, “not this Nazi one we have now.”

Now, the term “Nazi” is obviously not one to use lightly. Susan apparently got a laugh at the comment—especially at her response to Balaban’s admonishing her, which was simply to repeat the remark—and Newsday noted that “of all the places on largely Catholic Long Island, perhaps only in the Hamptons” could this happen. And yes, there’s a constant joke circulating that Pope Benedict looks kind of evil. Is he really a Nazi in the strictest sense of the word? Probably not. We do know that he was in the Hitler Youth as a teen, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s still a Nazi today. Maybe by using the term, Susan was calling him “dictatorial.” Who knows.

But I do give her credit for not backpedaling or apologizing for speaking her mind. Susan is well-known for her political outspokenness, and she always sticks to her guns—which is an admirable quality. She might want to think twice before casually tossing around such loaded words in the future, but still. Keep on sticking to your guns. We need more people like that in the world.

  1. Dancingsongman says:

Pope Benedict XVI is on record promoting a one world order. Most of the power behind the United Nations is directly tied to and directed by central banks. This is Fascism, which is Nazism.
