The Circumcision Debate

The painful choice new mothers must make

Well here’s one for the debaters out there. I’ve got to tell you, from what I know about male genitalia, I doubt I would have chosen anything other than circumcision for my two sons. They’re both “cut up.” OK, truth be told, all three of my boys are circumcised, know what I’m sayin’?

And I think that’s a very telling part of the circumcision debate here. The question, “What does Daddy’s penis look like?” probably comes into play when a baby boy is born. I don’t imagine many uncircumcised dads say to the pediatrician, “Sure, go ahead, remove the outer layer! I’ve got mine but he doesn’t need his!” And the same goes for circumcised men – I doubt many of them would instruct the doctor to leave the hood up on the little guy’s convertible.

If I had given any forethought to their foreskin, I might have asked to be with my sons as they were circumcised. If nothing else, to comfort them as they went through what I am sure is a painful surgery.

But I wasn’t there, and they’re now 10 and 7, and they’ve never had any health issues with their clean and neat little johnsons, and they’ve never said, “MOM! I hate you for mutilating my manhood when I was a baby and boy did that hurt!” They don’t remember.

For Jewish people, circumcision is part of a religious ceremony called a bris. Others may have their children circumcised because that’s what has been the norm in their family from generation to generation. I do think there are probably cleanliness benefits, although I’ve never gotten close enough to inspecting an uncircumcised penis to know for sure.

I think in most cases, parents choose circumcision for cosmetic reasons. The male genitalia is not really pretty to look at in the first place, but a circumcised penis seems well, less unappealing. Maybe? I don’t know. I guess this is kind of a touchy subject. Ha! Get it, touchy. Most men would like it to be a touchy subject whether or not they are circumcised!
