Health up your junk food!
By: Reed Walton
Can’t give up your favorite munchies? Heres are a few suggestions and substitutes to take you from junk food to good food:
Love pizza delivery? Add fresh veggies! Instead of loading up with toppings–even the limp, greasy olives or peppers on a veggie pizza–cut up a whole mess of fresh peppers, onions, artichoke hearts, fresh tomatoes, anything you want, and order a plain cheese pizza. When it arrives, blot the cheese grease off the top with a paper towel, and proceed to load up each slice with crisp, fresh veggies.
Craving french fries? Skip the potato and go with a yam! Instead of buying regular white potato fries, pick up a bag of raw sweet potatoes or yams. Slice into wedges and saute in olive oil instead of deep-frying. Or better yet, bake them in the oven after coating with olive oil and seasoning. These babies taste fantastic with anything from honey mustard to ketchup to maple syrup! And sweet potatoes are packed with free radical- fighting antioxidants, too.
Want ice cream? Cool off with berries! Like a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, berries are a summer treat (but a much healthier one!). So chill a bowl of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and/or blackberries in the fridge for about 30 minutes, then drizzle honey over them and spoon up super sweetness!
Need the crunch of chips and dip? Use whole-wheat pita or flatbread! Start with whole-wheat flatbreads or pitas, then coat them with olive oil (a kitchen sprayer works well) melted butter substitute. Bake in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, and you get the same crispness you crave. When you dip them in hummus you get amazing flavor too!
