Zzzz…Tips and Products to Help You Get Your Beauty Sleep
In honor of National Sleep Awareness week, we offer tips and products to help you have the best ZZZ’s of your life.
How many hours of sleep do you get on an average night? 6… 7… 8?
If it’s less than 7 hours, you’re one of the 35 percent of Americans who are seriously lacking in shut-eye, according to a new study by the CDC. This may not be breaking news, but when you consider the fact that sleep deprivation can lead to serious health problems such as diabetes, obesity, mental health conditions, a shorter lifespan and even death, you might want to think twice about your sleeping habits.
If you get the proper amount of sleep (7-9 hours per night), not only will you prevent these health problems, but you’ll also have more energy, perform better at school or work, feel more alert and even look better (they don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing!).
To improve your nightly snooze, try the following “Countdown to Bedtime” tips from Master Your Sleep: Proven Methods Simplified, the new book by Atlanta-based psychiatrist/psychotherapist Dr. Tracey Marks. For this method to work, keep your bedtime at the same time each night.
Dr. Marks’ Countdown to Bedtime:
6 Hours Before: No caffeine or cigarettes (aim for the last caffeine drink to be 12 hours before bed)
4 Hours Before: No more alcohol
2 Hours Before: No more exercise
1 Hour Before: No more fluids, no more work (only sleep and sex in bed!)
Start Wind Down: Put on pajamas and prepare for the next day (enjoy a warm bath or foot bath)
30 Minutes Before: Read, listen to music, practice breathing meditation, and relax your muscles (do these lying down and keep the lights dim)
Bedtime: Adjust thermostat to 68-74 degrees, use fan to help feel cool, turn the lights off, use eye covers to keep the room black, and cover LED displays
Using Dr. Marks’ countdown, it should only take you 15-30 minutes to drift into la-la-land. To make that peaceful beauty sleep last the whole night through, here are 10 helpful products:
