Ultimate Sightseeing Highlight
I have to admit that I had not put in the time researching the Greek Islands we were going to nor the fact that we were traveling to Kuşadası, Turkey as one of the cruise destinations. The morning we arrived in Kuşadası, I pulled open the curtains and saw a sea of palm trees brushed up against colorful homesteads climbing up the cliffs. It was a spectacular sight of paradise, but the ultimate sightseeing highlight was going to Ephesus, a 10th century Greek civilization that now lies about 30km away from Kuşadası.
After visiting Ephesus, we went to an artisan factory of carpets, leather goods, and jewelry. While I tend to be conservative in spending and focus more on the experiences of travel rather than accumulating things, a necklace cut my eye. It was an 18kt gold link necklace centered by a silver coin of a Greek Goddess head that was found in Ephesus during a later excavation in 1895 (a small portion of Ephesus was first discovered around 1863). I fell in love with the necklace and engaged in a series of negotiations, and after 45-minutes, I was able to get around 40% off the original asking price.
During our visit to Ephesus, we learned about the strength of women during this Classical Greek era, and it only seemed fitting to buy a necklace that embodies the strength of a Greek goddess. Now, as I observe the necklace around my neck, I am reminded of this magical period of time with my daughter and the strong young woman she is growing into.
