Taylor Swift Hunger Games

You know what’s really exciting? There’s only a little more than a month left before the big screen release of The Hunger Games. Naturally, this means that we’re grabbing at every little drip and drab of related material the studio deigns to give us, from production stills to fashion Tumblrs. And hey, look what just emerged! A music video for a song from the soundtrack album! Featuring Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars! Hoorah!

A mournful, simple tune, “Safe and Sound” is mostly just Taylor and her guitar—a nice change from the overproduced dreck that usually ends up on motion picture soundtracks. There’s a subtle military beat at the high points of the song, and overall, it’s got a folksy feel to it.

The video features Taylor with her new banged hairdo and a white dress making her way barefoot through what could be the woods beyond the fence of District 12. Where is she going? Well… maybe you should find out for yourself. Suffice to say that it’s spooky, eerie, and kind of perfect—and yes, there’s an appearance by Katniss Everdeen’s infamous mockingjay pin.

Taylor teamed up with Nashville-based band The Civil Wars for the song, which was produced by Grammy winner T-Bone Burnett. The Civil Wars band members Joy Williams and John Paul White told the Hollywood Reporter about the experience, “We were thankful when T-Bone Burnett called and said ‘Do you wanna write your own original song for it?’ We said ‘Yeah, sure.’ You don’t say no when T-Bone calls.” Even more impressive is the fact that they had only a minimal amount of time to write the song. “We had a four hour window and knocked it out,” Williams said, and according to Celebuzz, it was recorded the same day it was written.

Other high-profile artists to be featured on The Hunger Games soundtrack include The Arcade Fire and (one of my favorite bands ever) The Decemberists, so no doubt it will be a haunting and incredibly unique album. Check out the video here!
