John Edwards

Since he made a trip to Haiti in January after the devastating earthquake in that country, John Edwards, the multimillionaire presidential contender who got himself tangled up in a mess of infidelity and extramarital pregnancy, hasn’t been seen around too much.

According to an article by Diane Dimond on The Daily Beast website, Edwards, has even withdrawn from the people who worked with him on his campaign to win the Democratic presidential nomination. He’s living separately in Chapel Hill, N.C. from his estranged wife, Elizabeth, and their two children. During the past six weeks, according to The Daily Beast report, Edwards has come out of the gated community he lives in only to visit Emma Claire, 12, and Jack, 10.

But before that, Edwards, who wasn’t interviewed for the article, spent his evenings hanging out in two local bars, The Wooden Nickel and the Saratoga Grill, law-enforcement sources told Dimond. The sources said the former politician, once considered a serious contender for the White House, liked to strike up conversations with pretty, single women while drinking a glass of white wine.

His days haven’t been as much fun. Dimond says that Edwards spends a lot of time talking with his legal advisers about a possible indictment for misappropriating up to $1 million in campaign funds that might have been used to hide Edwards’ mistress, Rielle Hunter, during her pregnancy.

Sources also told Dimond that the Edwards’ 28,000-square-foot mansion will probably go on the market as Elizabeth Edwards looks to downsize. A source said that the former Senator’s wife was looking at houses in an historic neighborhood of Chapel Hill, as well as the Meadowmont neighborhood. Meadowmont is caustically known as Wisteria Lane, after the fictional location of Desperate Housewives.

Edwards is also busily avoiding legal subpoenas, which must be served directly to the person concerned, in the case that Rielle Hunter has brought against former Edwards aide Andrew Young. Hunter wants Young, author of the tell-all book Politicians, to give her all the book and movie rights. Some observers, Dimond said, believe that Edwards is financing Hunter’s legal moves.

In any case, according to the article, a legal courier has been trying unsuccessfully for a few weeks to serve Edwards with a subpoena from Young.

“Let us know if you find him,” Young’s attorney, Robert “Hoppy” Elliot, told the website. “Because we’ve been looking for him all over the place!” (The Daily Beast)

  1. Such a shame that this devastatingly handsome, intelligent politician let a horrendous extramarital affair ruin his career and his life! Although I’m a staunch Republican, I always felt that Edwards truly wanted the best for the US, unlike the winner of the election who has his own agenda. Poor Elizabeth! Dying from cancer wasn’t enough, she was humiliated by his love child with that wacko, Rielle Hunter.
Evidently, Edwards hasn’t learned much from that fiasco if he’s hanging out in bars – he’ll only meet another gold-digging fortune hunter.
