We’ve all been there. You love your friend dearly, but you can’t stand her boyfriend. Every time she brings him up, you do your best to avoid telling her what a dork he is (again). It’s a conflicting place to be because as happy as you want to be for your friend, it’s difficult to look on from the sidelines knowing that your BFF can do way better. We all know what happened to Lauren and Heidi from The Hills, but it doesn’t have to go that way. Here is what to do if your friend is in love with a jerk.

Determine if the problem is him… or YOU. Many times when we can’t stand someone, it has more to do with us than anything about them. Does he remind you of an ex who broke your heart? Are you jealous of the amount of time your friend spends with him and not you? Sometimes we project our own issues onto other people, but it’s not fair to punish the guy if he didn’t do anything wrong except for breathe.

If you realize that no, it’s absolutely without a shadow of a doubt definitely him, the next step is figuring out if it’s worth talking to your friend about. Think back to the last time that you were dating someone you really liked. You probably weren’t too receptive to people who called out their faults or talked negatively about them. If anything, it most likely made you rush to their defense. It’s only worth talking to your friend about it if your reasons for disliking the guy are serious. For example, is he just kind of annoying sometimes and make inappropriate jokes that make you roll your eyes? Totally lame…but not worth bursting your friend’s love bubble over. However, if he’s abusive, disrespectful or is engaging in any behavior that hurts your friend, now or in the future, speak up!
