I’m no football fanatic, but after hearing this, I can’t wait for the Super Bowl this weekend: 26 kids from Sandy Hook elementary school in Newton will be singing “America the Beautiful” in the pre-game show. Just typing that makes me want to cry.

The NFL, which has previously shown great public support for the community of Newton, is flying the kids in to Atlanta, and their performance will air live on CBS right before the National Anthem. (Sorry, Alicia Keyes, that’s going to be one tough act to follow.) I find this so particularly moving because I’m (trying to) recover / move forward / whatever you want to call it from my own personal tragedy and you know what? The world IS a beautiful place, in spite of all the sorrow, heartbreak and just general mayhem everywhere. And that’s the message that something like this sends — to those children and to everyone watching. Horrible things might happen, but there is love, and there is support, and there is beauty, and there is life.

It doesn’t always feel like it, and that’s why we need reminders.

If you haven’t seen it yet, watch this video of the children recording “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” to support charity efforts in Connecticut earlier this month. According to the Today.com, twenty-one children, ages 6 to 9, joined indie singer Ingrid Michaelson to record the song and their recording is now available for download on Amazon and iTunes.

Proceeds go to the Newtown Youth Academy and the United Way of Western Connecticut (Visit sandyhooksomewhereovertherainbow.com for more information on the charity recording.)

We love you, Sandy Hook babies — we mourn those who are lost, and we celebrate ALL of your lives, and we can’t wait to see your light shine on Sunday.
