Help! My “dining room” has been an ad hoc “play room” since we bought our house. It made sense at the time: moving from a small apartment, we didn’t even own a dining room table, and since our daughter, Isabella, wasn’t even one yet, it made sense to have some toys in there, so she could be occupied close to the kitchen. It worked out perfectly while she was little, but … fast forward TEN YEARS and I’m ready for a change!

I want to take back the dining room, and while I hunt for a table, I’m going to start with repainting the walls. Ergo, I was totally thrilled to work with Glidden paint to kickstart my dining room makeover! I actually am pretty happy with the color we originally chose (a decade ago!): I forget what it’s called, but it’s a very very VERY pale blue. It’s so blue it’s almost white. What I like about it is that it plays to the strength of the room, which is that it gets a lot of nice light (I go for rich, warm colors in darker rooms to make them cozy, and light colors in bright rooms to enhance the airiness). However, I think I’d like to kick it up a notch and find a more saturated pale blue. I’m also open to going wild and crazy, and going in a totally different color direction. This is where YOU come in! I’ll show you my options, but first, here’s what we’re working with:

I know, I know — I decided not to even tidy up before I took the pics. This is real life, complete with all the clutter! It’s a nice space with beautiful floors and good light … Hopefully you can make out the paint color behind all that stuff Isabella has up on the wall. OK, so, on to choosing a new color!

  1. I think the SPRING BLUEBELL would look great. The floors in the sample remind me of the floors in your picture. I think they would showcase that great looking hardwood.

  2. I LOVE THE COMBINATION OF ALL THREE. I WOULD FIND SOME WAY TO INCORPORATE ALL OF THESE COLORS BY CREATING A MURAL. IT WOULD BE FUN TO DO ARTWORK ON THE WALL. IF I HAD TO CHOOSE ONE COLOR, IT WOULD BE WATERMELON SMOOTHIE!

  3. I like the bluebell one. I always get design ideas from design on a dime HGTV show….my latest was modernizing my kitchen cabinets with paint and new knobs

  4. I like Soft Meadow. Our last home decor project was inspired by the decor of Restoration Hardware store. We got an antique console table and a coffee table for the living room.

  5. Oooooh I really love that Robins Egg, Watermelon Smoothie, and Spanish Olive combination that you found! Really pretty and it pops out :) My last home decor project was inspired by some funky artwork I found at a second hand store along with some ideas my daughter had for what would look cool :)

  6. I like the soft meadow! What inspired my last project was an all-over scroll stencil I saw online that looked so classy. I bought it and created a wallpaper look in our bathroom.

  7. I love spring bluebell! I mayyyy be partial to lavender colors and I may have just bought pretty much that same color for my laundry room. You never know!

I need some inspiration for our master suite. It's still the same ivory color the builder bestowed upon us.

Inspiration? I'm supposed to remember where it comes from more than a week later? Sometimes I do:

Sara at Thrifty Deco chick has been inspiration for some projects.
Marian at Miss Mustard Seed has, too.
Centsational Girl and her Ikea billy built ins made me realize I could tackle that project in my husband's office. (the room which I know keenly wish to convert to a butler's pantry)

I get inspiration from my mother and grandmother and aunt. I get inspiration from more blogs than I can mention.

  9. Our last (or current) home remodel project was born out of necessity after a tree fell on our master bedroom in June. We're getting close to having the room back to "normal" and did upgrade the bathroom tile to a beautiful marble which inspired the rest of the theme.

  10. I really like the warm stone, it would be so easy to accessorize. MY latest project is our master bedroom, and we used a pair of drapes in soft teal as our inspiration.

  11. the last home decor project i did was our dining room and I was inspired by the house we visited at the beach on our summer vacation, i love it!
